You are the Big12 Commish: Now Draw Up Divisions

I had a thought during the thread on the Losing A&M Gaining TCU: In Pictures post, but you all ignored it. Now I'm going to make it a FanPost so I can feel twice the ignored-ness (ignorance?). I think this could be a fun discussion, but if I'm wrong so be it.

I keep hearing people say things like 'when we get Louisville and BYU they will be in the North Division'. We should start a movement to forget about North/South Divisions completely. When I shared my ideas with a gooner buddy of mine he shrugged it off and said it's inevitable that it will end up OU, OSU and the 4 texas schools in the South, and everyone else in the North.

I’m hoping if/when it gets to 12 teams it won’t be a North/South division. East/West would be tough to draw the line. Why not create something arbitrary like Division A: OU, UT, OSU, Baylor, ISU, new team A Division B: Missery, TCU, TTech, KU, KSU, new team B? Nothing says it has to be North/South right? I would keep OU, OSU, UT together for rivalries. KU, KSU, Missouri likewise. Split the rest as equitably as possible. Call Division A the Scorpion Division, B can be Cobra Division.

Basically, I don't want to go back to seeing our division winner play in the Big12 Championship against a team that would be 4th in our division. And I hate the idea that the Big12 should use a weak North Division as a recruiting tool to lure new teams/keep Mizzou. "Hey Mizzou why would you go get less relevant in the SEC when you'll have an easy road to the Conference Championship game in this weak North Division with Boise St, Air Force, and all the other teams you've been beating the last few years?" Ugh.

What do you think? If you could make the divisions up however you wanted how would you divide them? Assume Mizzou stays and TCU, BYU (or new team A), and Louisville (or new team B) fill out the 12. Be creative, draw up the 2 or 4 (or 12 if you're drunk) divisions with no rules. What would the divisions be called? If you are like my gooner buddy and you'd rather resign to the inevitability of North/South divisions that pretty much look like the old Big12, please tell me why you think it HAS TO end up that way.

Or ignore the idea. Again. I enjoy talking to myself anyway.

As much as I don't like the the power imbalance

Gerrymandering the divisions has been terrible for the ACC. Granted, the underlying goal there was to get a Miami v. FSU championship game (which has never happened), not to correct a power imbalance, but I still think it would be more trouble than it’s worth. I’d rather keep with the natural geographic split.

If you watch "The Lord of the Rings" backwards it's about this little dude that finds a really cool ring in a volcano and spends the rest of the three movies walking home.

REC'D Fo Sho

Gerrymandering! I haven’t heard that term since High School Gov’t class. Sweet Gerrymandering Petunias. Wish I’d thought to throw that term in my post.

Speaking of Balance

Am I hearing correctly that OU is in the process of developing its own network deal? After all the crap the the Longhorn Network has caused? When the idea of a Big XII network was mentioned, Boren claimed surprise since the OU network is on the horizon or some such shit. How is this going to do anything other than further alienate everyone else in the conference? Fuucckk!!

OU started "developing" their own Natwork the same time the Longhorns did

Keeping up with the Jonses and all… It’s just that OU doesn’t have as much money as UT. OU doesn’t promise as many viewers as UT does. And most importantly OU isn’t getting a $300 Million reacharound from ESPN like UT did. That’s why OU’s isn’t on the air yet. The ESPN thing is what really took BevoTV from annoying to conference shattering. OU’s will just be annoying.

late but

Division A & Division B
Kansas State & Kansas (Sunflower Showdown since 1902)
Oklahoma & Oklahoma State (Bedlam Series since 1904)
Texas & Texas Tech (Chancellor’s Spurs since 1928)
Baylor & Texas Christian (Great Revival since 1899)
Iowa State & West Virginia

Two divisions with 1 annual cross division games and 2 rotating cross division games. The annual cross division game is built on established rivalry as well as splitting travel evenly. Every one plays a Kansas team, an Oklahoma team, and 2 Texas teams. So not just travel but also exposure. Open up conference play with your annual cross division rival. This provides a recurring even from one season to next. This also allows for the possibility that teams from a set of cross division rivalry could both end up as division champions and end up in a rematch in the conference championship to end the season with (thus putting as many games as possible between the first match and the rematch).

Each division will continue certain rivalries as well and they could serve as the basis for rivalry weekend.
Texas & Oklahoma (Red River Rivalry since 1900)
Texas & Kansas State (Chisholm Trail since 1913)
Iowa State & Kansas State (Farmageddon since 1917)
obviously new in division rivalries will be needed to replace lost ones with Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, and TA&M as well as make new ones with TCU & WVU.

any additional programs should consider how they fit as rivals.
Louisville & Cincinnati (Keg of Nails rivalry since 1929) for instance would be a great addition.
