Penn State wins NCAA wrestling championship with Pokes a close second

Penn State scored 123 1/2 points to 119 1/2 to the Pokes while winning their 3rd consecutive national championship. OSU entered the finals trailing Penn State by 3 points and needed both of it's finalists to win while 4 of PSU's 5 finalists lost. Unfortunately for OSU Penn State senior Quentin Wright pulled off a mild upset of Dustin Kilgore at 197 pounds, which combined with Ed Ruth's powerful performance at 184 allowed the Nittany Lions to escape the Pokes by the skin of their teeth.

OSU crowned 2 individual champions, plus multiple All Americans, on the way to it's runnerup finish. OSU's champions were Jordan Oliver, undefeated national champion at 149 pounds, and Chris Perry, who won the title at 174 pounds in a nailbiting overtime victory over Matt Brown from PSU. Perry's last 3 matches in the tournament all went into overtime. Other placers for OSU were Jonathan Morrison 5th at 133 pounds, Alex Dieringer 3rd at 157 pounds, Tyler Caldwell 3rd at 165, Blake Rosholt 8th at 197 pounds, and Alan Gelogaev finished 3rd at Heavyweight.

The Pokes exceeded expectations for the most part. Dieringer, Caldwell, Morrison, and Rosholt exceeded their seeds. Chris Chionuma, the 9th seed at 184, failed to place, as did 125 pounder Eddie Klimara (who did win two matches) and Julian Feikert. Feikert and Chionuma both won 1 match. Alan Gelogaev had a 1 point lead over Tony Nelson of Minnesota and just had to avoid being taken down for a trip to the finals (where he would have been a heavy favorite over McMullan from Northwestern)....and inexplicably tried to perform the strange wrestling move "The Flying Squirrel". Seriously, you can't make stuff like this up. Nelson swatted him down like a fly and rode him out for the win. The loss, combined with Gelogaev's unsportsmanlike conduct penalty which cost OSU 1 team point, probably cost the Pokes the national title.

OSU loses only 3 wrestlers to graduation, Jordan Oliver (2 time national champion and 4 times All American) and Gelogaev (2 time All American), plus Chionuma. All in all a good performance by OSU, and they will be a contender again next season.

Simply Amazing

OSU's wrestling team set a new conference record for points scored while stomping everybody at the conf wrestling tourney...and not a whisper here of their achievement. OSU is one of the favorites for the NCAA wrestling championship...and not a word here. Meanwhile, the bball team which is destined to lose early in March Madness gets tons of coverage.

I really don't get it. The one sport that OSU really excels in and is a yearly contender for the national title is simply ignored by this site while sports its' mediocre in are fawned over like there will be no tomorrow. What gives?

Oklahoma State Basketball Midseason Review

With 7 Games remaining who predicted OSU would be tied for 1st in the Big 12 with Kansas and Kansas St? Not to mention have an Overall record of 18-5.

As far as the players go, there have been 3 guys that have far exceeded my exprectations for the year.
#1 Marcus Smart - I know he was a highly touted Mcdonalds All American guard so how could he have possibly overachieved? Well I expected him to come in and do some nice things but he has completely taken over this team and is contributing in every category at a high level.
#2 Michael Cobbins - Now this might be just what have you done for me lately. Which is a lot, and i expect him to continue to build confidence and end the season well.

#3 Phil Forte - I admit I was skeptical about him doing well being that he is small. But now that he has stepped in for Keiton Page quite easily, I am excited for his future.

Biggest disappointment? Lebryan Nash. What do we need to do to get this guy on track with the expectations? He just has not shown the consistency that OSU fans have come to desire. He is averaging decent numbers scoring & rebound but just hasn't completely taken over enough games so far. I still leave hope for him to finish strong and make a statement in the Big 12/NCAA Tourney. In my opinion if he has aspirations of going to the NBA after this season than I think he has work left to do. STOP BEING LAZY! Im tired of seeing wasted possesions by him just slowly jogging down the court.

AND IN OTHER NEWS: Texas plays at Oklahoma State on Saturday.

I, along with many others, was reminded today that the pending anxst with which we face the upcoming tilt with Texas is only superficial.

The dislike for the Longhorns, or the Sooners, or Baylor, is not real. It is not tangible. The great joy we feel in victory, or the grief we experience in defeat, is temporary at best as we return to our everday lives.

No amount of sports "distraction" can take us away from life.

I was struck by events of today, and the irony of their connection.

This morning, a 13 yr old junior high student chose to end his life.

Tonight, my 95 yr old aunt essentially chose the same.

Two drastically different moments, for drastically different reasons, but the same end result.

"I have grown tired of living this life, and I'm ok with it."

I have seen or heard it so many times, on both ends. Young people overwhelmed by bullying, illness, depression. Elderly folks tired of pain, disease, or loneliness.

I know that these things affect all ages, but today's particular grouping of two people on opposite ends of the journey once again brought perspective to what I normally talk about on almost a daily basis.

We all have the potential to reach that stage, a point where we just really don't want to do this anymore. Unfortunately far too many get there far too soon in life. If we could only all be 110 when that time arrives.

Thankfully, until then, we have our beloved sports teams, at all levels, to distract us from such things.

Just keep in mind that no amount of losing on the field will ever match the grief of losing this...

(my father, 81, 4 months before his passing, 1999)

Nor will the greatest victories surpass the joy of this...

(my son's birth, Feb 2006)

I have enjoyed the banter these past few weeks with the good folks from Longhorn Land. The chatter has been predominantly above board, with the rare exception. Might never happen, but maybe someday I'll get the chance to share a few beers and life stories with some of them, or the Cowboy fans and writers I share my homerism with.

Until that moment, let me end with this...when we "walk off the field" Saturday night, either vanquished or victorious, know that we are all returning to the normal stuff of families, work, or friends, and in the end we are all part of a much larger fan club.

GOD BLESS AND GO POKES!!!

Saturday Game Day Information

Hello Pokes!

Feel free to ignore, I would understand, but my lady and I (and a couple of friends) are looking for things to do Saturday leading up to the OSU v Texas game. I'm a Longhorn fan, but the lady is a die hard Poke if that helps at all (I know, I know, what is she doing with me?-Good question).

We aren't too familiar with the area (been to a few basketball games, and were here last year for Bedlam) but are looking for some fun areas as we will be there most of the day leading up to the game. I saw some info about going to DT Stillwater but we would like to stay close to the campus if possible.

We aren't too picky, but would like a place with college football fans and maybe an adult beverage or two. :)

Thanks in advance for any help you can give! And any other time except this weekend-Go Pokes!

If OU fans are honest with themselves, Barry Sanders is the one that got away...

The greatest running back in the history of college and pro football is also an astonishing recruiting story as well. At a time prior to ESPN and recruiting services that track every player regardless of talent level, Barry Sanders flew underneath the recruiting radar. This fact was extremely pleasing to Pat Jones

OSU Basketball Predictions for 2012-2013. Who will be this years leaders? Suprise newcomers? Tourney?
My Prediction
Markel Brown will be the leader of the team.
Average about 14pts/6reb/3ast/2st
Le'bryan Nash will start to be more consistent and show off some of that all around talent they we know he has. Average 17pts/8reb/1blk/2ast
newcomer for this year is Phil Forte. Everyone will be focused in on our talented guys and i can see Forte taking over for losing Keiton Page. But forte will become a better PG than page was.

Cowboys about to set another mark for winning in 2012.

Since 2006, OSU has equalled or bettered their win total from the previous season. Probably a few folks took that bet in 2011. Any takers for pulling that off in 2012?

Not to worry...Gundy will lead OSU to another mark never before reached by this football program.

Since 2006, OSU has equalled or bettered their win total from the previous season. Probably a few folks took that bet in 2011. Any takers for pulling that off in 2012?

Not to worry...Gundy will lead OSU to another mark never before reached by this football program.

Seven winning seasons in a row.

Prior to 2011, per the athletic department's website, the Cowboys, since 1901, have reached a winning record in a maximum of 6 consecutive seasons.

Once.

That was during the Thurman Thomas/Barry Sanders/Hart Lee Dykes/Mike Gundy/Pat Jones tenure from 1983-88. And immediately following that, they launched into the worst losing streak in school history, recording 1 winning season in the next 13 ('60-71 saw 12 consecutive losing seasons but recorded a higher overall winning %).

They have twice before reached 5 successive winning campaigns ('29-33 and '72-76).

2011 marked the 6th winning season in a row ('06-11).

It was also the 9th winning season in the last 10 (previous best was 8 out of 10 from '79-88).

So even though we probably won't surpass the record we would all like to see eclipsed in 2012, OSU is likely to set another mark in this long run of Cowboy football success.

Obviously, that other school south of OKC would scoff at our eagerness to set such a mediocre mark.

Just for comparison...OU recorded 28 consecutive winning seasons, from '66-93. Longest streak without a winning season...6 ('29-34). The Sooners have recorded 10 or more consecutive winning seasons on 5 separate occasions. Only 2 coaches have held the post more than 5 years with 100% winning records...Switzer (16 yrs) and Stoops (13 & counting). The Soorners have only failed 10 times since 1937 to post a winning record.

But over the past 3 years...

OU is 30-10, 1 Big 12 title

OSU is <strike>29-10</strike> 32-7, 1 Big 12 title (Thanks to CWKnox for the correction, and reminder about Big 12 titles)

I'm sorry...could you remind me again who the reigning Big 12 champions are?

Ok....never mind...

GO POKES!!!

Many are thinking it...but do we dare speak it?

Expectations.

Oklahoma State football fans had a rare opportunity in 2011. Normally, we base all our expectations for the season on what happened the year before. The 2010 campaign put Cowboy fans in a position generally occupied by Sooner fans, as we truly anticipated going undefeated, winning the Big 12, and playing for a national championship.

However, the departure of Weeden and Blackmon, along with the assent of a freshman QB, have prognosticators and fans alike talking themselves into being happy with 8-4 or 9-3. If you're an OSU fan, that's pretty good, right?

Expectations.

There seems to be something simmering...bubbling...just under the surface of those "realistic" expectations.

Could we see another run like 2011?

The subtle signs are there, and there is developing excitement, even among some serious bloggers.

I've put forward recently that it was not unreasonable to expect Lunt to do a very admirable job stepping into the shoes vacated by Weeden. He comes in with more actual QB experience, and is already a repeat champion holding multiple HS passing records. But that's just my amateur opinion.

I think we can all agree that Todd Monken lacks a certain "filter" when speaking about his players and their progress. Unlike Gundy, who guards everything that comes out of his mouth (and I believe has a "well used" Twitter voodoo doll), Monken doesn't hold much back.

He has been quoted multiple times speaking about how Lunt doesn't know what he's doing yet, but he doesn't turn the ball over and is really accurate. Josh Stewart said "I don’t approach it any different. Wes Lunt throws it just like Weeden, so I’m not going to compare them" (which BTW, is a comparison). And the last practice report was enough to send me over the edge. I love Monken's assessment of the scrimmage in general..."I just know that we're trying to run plays. We're trying to run as many good plays in a row as we can."

The fact is this...as my brother often says, we will never be as good as we are the day before we play our first game.

It's all hype and speculation, fun as it may be, and doesn't account for luck...the bounces, the injuries, the bad whistles...that can derail even the greatest of champions. OSU has had those things on their side, for the most part, the last couple of years (anyone remember Weeden stepping out of the back of the end zone while throwing a pick 6 against Texas? That was GOOD luck. The injury to OU's Broyles was BAD luck.).

I've said this too many times already, but the first 4 games (actually 3 games and 1 exhibition) will be the barometer, and if the Cowboys emerge from that home contest against Texas unscathed, put on your seatbelts because OSU will be poised for another run just like 2011.

The biggest reason why I say this? Answer these two questions...Is there one game on our schedule right now that you would say is out of the question, we are not winning that game?

Is there one team on our schedule right now that is CLEARLY head and shoulders better than OSU?

Because the defense is the same, and the offense has plenty of weapons and a guy who knows how to get them the ball.

My biggest fear, and I know there are those who think this is BS, is Squinky.

That's right, the imaginary OSU football devil.

I'm a big believer in Squinky.

Squinky is nothing more than a name put to the bounces, injuries, and bad whistles than can derail a season. It is bad luck.

My Juco golf coach used to say that "Luck is when preparation meets opportunity."

I think the Cowboys are prepared.

And I'm dreaming big.

GO POKES!!!

I was still a golf professional, and had worked out a gig through contacts at my club to coach boys JV HS basketball, as well as assist with the boys and girls golf teams in the spring, all for a local private high school. Basketball went well, and March brought a golf/tennis camp trip to Florida with all the kids who were trying out for the teams. I had just turned 44, and my son Joshua was just over a month old. Yea, the wife wasn't so excited about the trip.

Yea, the wife wasn't so excited about the trip.

There were fairly strict rules about curfews and such, and the place was basically an isolated resort, so you couldn't really leave on your own.

One evening, the trip coordinators arranged a bus ride to a local "arcade," featuring two kinds of go carts, batting cages, video gaming, etc. We were waiting for everyone to board the bus to head back to the resort. I was sitting with one of the tennis coaches when I heard one of his boys behind us state the following to a friend sitting next to him:

"I don't understand why they treat us like children. I mean, we are 17, we shouldn't have to deal with a curfew."

Without hesitating, I turned around in my seat and said the following (this was over 6 years ago, so I might not remember it exactly, but it's close enough):

"I know you'll pass me off as the uncool adult who doesn't understand you, but there is something I understand that you can't understand until your my age, and that is you are stupid. You might be really intelligent, but that doesn't make you smart. You see, I remember being your age, and I was a raging, maniacal idiot. Not because I wasn't intelligent, but because it is impossible at your age to have the judgment and wisdom brought by experience. You don't get that every little move you make now has the potential to alter your life, possibly forever. The rest of your life seems so far away, but you will realize when you are me that it goes by in the blink of an eye. When you're 20, you'll think about how dumb you were at 16. When you're 30, you'll wonder how you survived being 20. At 40, you'll look back at the fool who was 30, and so on."

"So you have a curfew for your own protection. The fact is, many of you could be trusted to be out on your own, but since we don't know which on of you that is, we restrict everyone in order to protect the few who would damage themselves and possibly others. So now that I've bored you to death, you can go back to bitching about curfew on a week long all expenses paid holiday provided by your parents."

Needless to say, I am not on that kid's Christmas card list...

These athletes are kids. Period.

Adrenaline. Testosterone. Poor judgment. Perfect ingredients for the "let's fuck up" cocktail. Add some drugs or alcohol and you have guaranteed foolishness. I won't even go into the egos fostered by the stardom of the little pond.

There's so many of them, it has to be impossible to keep track of them all. Basketball is a much smaller group, but still, what are you going to do? Assign baby sitters for everyone? I can guarantee kids would have hated playing for me. The baskeball stuff would have been fine, but the off the court rules would have been oppressive, and curfews would have been #1...bed checks...girl checks...

And for the Cowboys, it will only get tougher.

You see, OSU has for years only had to deal with a diva or two. Recruiting meant getting kids who need to prove their worth. Now that Stillwater is attracting championship caliber talent, they will also get championship caliber egos, kids who feel either entitled or bulletproof. Athletes who have been coddled and "yessed," never told no or made to toe the line. Or maybe kids who are just plain stupid, whose talent got them past the roadblocks.

This is the water we have always wanted to swim in, the deep end of the pool.

Oh how I wish they all slept in one place and had a curfew.

GO POKES!!!

New "QB" Math: Lunt is more than capable of stepping in for "The Man."

So all we've heard about is OSU going from a 28 yr old QB to an 18 yr old QB.

Well, sorta like the age questions Weeden faces in the NFL, that comparison don't mean shit. Let's look at the real math that will determine how successful Lunt may be as he begins his journey to replace The Godfather of Cowboy QB's.

When Brandon Weeden assumed the controls in 2010 of one of the best, most balanced offenses in the country, it's not like he came in having started a couple years in HS, made some hay in the HS playoffs, or saw some quality action as a b/u in his first couple of years as a college QB.

Weeden was the starting QB for Edmond Sante Fe for 1 full season. He lead them to their first ever win in the HS playoffs. Not like he took the reigns to a juggernaut of a program. That was 2001.

In the spring of 2002 he was drafted by the NY Yankees, and would not return to football until 2007, when he would walk on at Oklahoma State. As coaches have stated repeatedly, he showed them nothing that would indicate he would achieve the level of stardom that was about to come.

Until that fateful Thursday night in 2009, when OSU was forced to put in their 3rd string QB, Weeden had seen no meaningful game time. We all know what happened. Coaches, especially Gundy, took a lot of heat for not continuing to play Weeden in place of an obviously injured and ineffective Zac Robinson. On top of all this, once 2010 came along, he had to learn a completely new offensive system with a new offensive coordinator.

So just to recap...

1 full season of starting QB experience in HS with 1 HS playoff win;

6 year break in football participation; 9 years between starts from HS to college;

Only 1 half of meaningful playing time (but oh what a half it was) during that period;

And look what happened.
So how does Wes Lunt compare?

2 full seasons as starting QB with back to back state championships, 1 undefeated season, and multiple HS state records;

Enrolls early and beats out experienced b/u and highly touted redshirt freshman competitors;

Will be running an offense similar to his HS system;

So really, remove the age difference and Lunt walks on the field with a lot more football in his back pocket. Yes, maturity and leadership are critical and Weeden had both in spades. But reports seem to indicate that Lunt is already establishing himself as an up and coming leader on offense.

Of course the jury is out until he takes the field in live action, but I'm already convinced that we won't have to wait until 2013 to see something special from our new crown prince. The coaches and players saw Weeden up close, and nobody's flinching when speaking about Lunt, not even Monken. The coaches readily admitted that Weeden was still learning the QB basics...footwork, pocket awareness and mobility, progressions...while shocking all with his success in 2010. Remarkable.

But Lunt doesn't face those hurdles. He is just dealing with the adjustment to the speed and added complexity of the college game.

If all goes as predicted, his baptism will be 9/29. If the Cowboys survive that event, this could get interesting.
And we all know how predictions can go...

GO POKES!!!

I’ve always believed, WE, at OSU were better than that. Maybe a lot of the young people do not know or have never experience the put downs and arrogance, we at OSU, endured in the Big 8 and the beginning of the Big XII. I invite the OSU Alumni and fans to act like we should, proud and respectful OSU Alumni and fans. Let us support our school and our programs with joy and respect, maybe, just maybe, it’ll rub off on other schools. Lets don’t become the people we hate. WE ARE OSU!!!
Useless amateur predictions for OSU football.

Since it seems EVERYONE is sharing their preseason predictions for OSU and the Big 12, I guess I'll take a stab at it...some serious...some maybe not...

Since it seems EVERYONE is sharing their preseason predictions for OSU and the Big 12, I guess I'll take a stab at it...some serious...some maybe not...

2012 Lock of the Year...Wes Lunt as Big 12 Newcomer/Yr. Maybe someone like CJ Curry could get in there?

Most outlandish prediction #1...Wes Lunt takes Big 12 Offensive POY.

Most outlandish prediction #2...OSU controls its own destiny for the Big 12 title with 3 games left.

Defensive prediction #1...that side of the ball won't be as porous in 2012

Defensive prediction #2...that side of the ball won't be as takeaway happy in 2012

Defensive prediction #3...#1 &#2 will lead to about the same result as 2011

# of games before Monken gets "beeped"...this depends a bit on the media, but I say 0. There's got to be one good f-bomb in there for preseason practice.

# of memorable Monken quotes...24

Score of Bedlam...38-24 Cowboys. Stoops has lost the magic (not that he ever really had it), and Landry Jones has been exposed.

My favorite prediction from the media...Gina Mizell, Daily Ok...Landry Jones throws more interceptions than Wes Lunt.

Lamest prediction...Daily Ok OU beat writer Jason Kersy...Landry Jones as B12 Off POY. Seriously? I honestly believe Wes Lunt has a better shot at it.

When does CRFF go "boner?" Right after OSU thrashes the Longhorns and Lunt throws it all over the field.

How many KO returns for TD will Justin Gilbert deliver? 0...that's right...the new KO rules will wipe out 90+% of his opportunities. That really sucks.

Will Pistols Guy survive the season? Yes, given the previous prediction, unless Gilbert starts returning interceptions for touchdowns...

Does Clint Chelf see the field this season? I think he will have some chances, depending on how quickly games get out of hand. Savannah St is his best bet. JW is going to be the 2nd string guy, and will be getting some action during regular game activity.

Game I'm most worried about #1...West Virginia. The Red Bull Express has done it before in Stillwater.

Game I'm most worried about #2...Arizona. First game against Div 1 talent, on the road, FR QB. Never mind we've handled them pretty easily the last 2 times we met. Lot's of those guys are still there...

My final crazy, out of this universe prediction...OSU repeats as Big 12 champs. Seriously...the only teams we don't know about are TCU and WVU, and I'm not that concerned with TCU. The rest of the gang we can deal with. Honestly, who else besides WVU would you expect to potentially run us out of the building? Two "ifs"...if the defense is that improved (and Bill Young plays something other than prevent all season), and if Lunt comes as advertised, this team will once again be WAY better than ANYONE is expecting, and I don't see ANYONE in the league who will be decidedly better than them.
