Maybe the SEC?

Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas need to start marketing themselves as a package to the SEC. As much as I hate to say it, the SEC dominates on the field and in television money. Sometimes the best way to beat them is to join them. If those three teams market themselves together I think the SEC is ignorant to not take them. You add the football traditions at Oklahoma and Texas, all those national titles in everything else from OSU plus the television markets in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Oklahoma City and yes Tulsa. Overall it is a good move for all three schools as it creates border rivals between Oklahoma and Arkansas, Oklahoma State and Arkansas and it keeps OU-Texas in place as well as it rekindles the Texas-Arkansas rivalry. In addition, it adds a rivalry between OU and LSU. You know how the OU fans hate Les Miles? LOL. A rivalry between LSU and OSU. OSU would get to play their former coach Les Miles every year. In addition, Arkansas fans are screaming they want OU every year, so give them that beat down they are begging for. On top of that OSU and Arkansas used to play annually until OSU started improving and zip Arkansas dropped them. It would be great by the time Arkansas got through every year with OU, OSU and Texas that would add at least 2 if not 3 losses to every Hog season.

How great would it be?

If OU, OSU, & Texas started behind the scenes conversations with the SEC like last week, and by the time all was said and done the SEC tells A&M thanks for blowing up the Big 12 but we’re not going to take you because we got OU, Texas, and OSU instead. That would be awesome. ain’t happening, but awesome thought.

I'm sorry but I hate the idea of joining the SEC.

I would rather not make the same mistake as A&M by slipping back into football mediocrity. The money OSU could make by joining the PAC 16 would be every bit as good as joining the SEC and it would be much easier to have success and make a BCS bowl in that conference every year.

Yes, I agree it is probably going to be the PAC 16...

Yes, I agree it is probably going to be the PAC 16 but I disagree the money is not as good as in the SEC. The Big 10 and the SEC have the biggest television contracts not the PAC 16. In addition, the competition would be better in the SEC then the PAC 16 plus that trip to Oregon to play Oregon and Oregon State and to Washington and Washington State is going to be grueling for OSU, OU and Texas. I think the move to a west coast conference is a bad move. None of us fit in that conference geographically we are a better fit for the SEC. However, the SEC brass has said they do not want OSU. Really, the SEC took Arkansas but do not want OSU? Wow, oh yeah I forgot the Hogs have won a lot of track national titles and are the only SEC team to lose to a Big 10 team in a BCS bowl game. I see the logic there.Furthermore, I see why the SEC would not want to add the tradition of OU, Texas and OSU and add Texas A&M it makes perfect sense.

The new Pac12 TV deal is the riches in college football

More than the SEC and that is without counting the new Pac12 network starting up next year. Unlike the LHN, the Pac12 network already has contracts with Time Warner, Cox, Brighthouse and Comcast. They have 40M homes under contract and are expect to add at least another 20-25M before they start next season. The year four revenue projection is $12-15M per team, add that to the $21M from ESPN/Fox and we are talking some big dollars. Since it’s built on the Big10 model, those revenues go up as they continue to build out. Keep in mind, the Pac12 owns 100% of the network too, something that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

The PAC 12/16/whatever

is about to redo their tv contracts if I’m not mistaken and each team is going to make at least $25-30 million if I remember correctly. Do you happen to know the numbers for the SEC and Big 10 for comparison?

Also, to be blunt I don’t care what the competition is like in the SEC. OSU is just now starting to flourish as a football school and I really don’t want to go back to 7-5 seasons just to say “we play in the most difficult conference in the nation!” If OSU can play in the PAC and still get to the national championship game, then what’s the difference?

As for the distances, OSU would only have to travel to the coast twice a year at the most (maybe only once) for football. And honestly, a six hour plane ride is a lot less grueling than the bus trips teams used to have to take 20-30 years ago. If TCU can make it work in the Big East, OSU can make it work in the PAC.

by Royal John on Sep 2, 2025 10:26 AM CDT reply actions

The travel is a bigger issue in the non revenue sports than it is for football. The track teams’ travel budget would probably triple.

I like your comment about ‘whats the difference if they can make the bcs title game if they are in the pac 12’ anyways. Its well respected and not such a gauntlet like the SEC. I enjoy watching the Cowboys do well now too, Blackman is a beast and its a fun offense to watch. If okla state moves, i hope its to the pac 12

Oh well it looks as though OSU is going to follow OU blindly into the PAC 16

No geographic ties to this conference, long road trips, this is not going to benefit OSU at all. Sorry Royal John the networks just don’t renegotiate TV deals everytime a conference realigns itself and the current deal will remain in the effect until expiration. So as a Cowboy fan, why cannot OSU stand on their own two feet and make a decision that benefits us? Why have we not pursued the SEC harder or the BIG 10? We do not have to do everything the Sooners do or follow them off the PAC-16 cliff!

by Franchise72 on Sep 6, 2025 10:15 AM CDT reply actions

I'm a huge OSU fan.

But I also know where we stand as far as attractiveness goes. We did not have an invite from the SEC or the Big 10 for pretty obvious reasons. We do not have the biggest state populous and we do not have the majority of TV sets or giant fanbase. These are just the facts.

Please tell me how trips to Colorado, Utah, or Arizona are any worse than trips to South Carolina, Alabama, or Florida.

I’m fairly sure TV contracts are renegotiated in the circumstance that more national map is covered. How else would the newly added teams be broadcasted?

And again, how does any other conference benefit us more than the PAC? Do you really want to see OSU slip back into mediocrity in the SEC? How is the Big 10 any better geographically? We go with the Sooners because we want to keep the rivalry and state partnership in tact. I’m not really sure why you consider the PAC 16 a cliff. If anything, that conference is going to be a safety net when the Big 12 comes crumbling down. Would you rather end up in the WAC, Mountain West, or Conference USA?

You need to research the Pac-12's TV deal more.

There’s an escalator clause that allows for renegotiation if the conference expands.

Based on the markets the PAC is in right now, they have the largest network television contract at $20+mil/yr per school and SOLE ownership of the Pac12Network, which is expected to bring in up to another $15mil/yr per school once it’s established. Those numbers go up if the DFW, Houston, SA/Austin, and Tulsa/OKC markets are added.

You also need to look at what the conferences are looking for in their expansions. The B1G is even more “snobbish” about academics than the PAC has been. The SEC is looking to add major markets in their expansion. They may be willing to take oSu as a precondition of Oklahoma joining, but they likely won’t take oSu by itself if Oklahoma is on the table.

The PAC has demonstrated a desire to take oSu as part of preserving the in state rivalry and travelling partner system we’ve had for decades (with the very recent exception of CU and UU). And depending on who else comes in, the majority of the Big12 South could be coming together, and either CU or UU, and one of the Arizonas would be the furthest you’d travel for division play, in addition to ONE trip per year to the coast for an inter-division game. The additional costs would be more than made up for in increased television revenue.

All good points...

You all made some good points and I thank you. Please let me explain. I am also a Razorback fan and I made some critical comments on the Hoglet Blog about the Hogs after week one and instead of a discussion it evolved into name calling. There is this one clown over there who keeps responding with insults. Pretty humorous I think I could post something with a title and nothing in the body and this guy would respond and call me an idiot, or a troll or a fool or something else. There is always one.

Go Pokes, I guess as long as we end up in a conference with a good TV deal and equitable revenue sharing it will all be good.

As a Texas alumnus

I want no part of the SEC. I know a lot of people think that considering academics is a tenuous argument, and I get a lot of what they’re saying: Academics ≠ athletics, and the conference with which you’re affiliated is in no way indicative of your academics, nor should the conference affiliation cause any detriment towards your academic prowess. That said, I believe firmly in the “guilty by association principle,” and the perception (note that I’m not saying it’s the reality) is that outside of Vanderbilt and Florida, the SEC schools are academic trash. I don’t want that association with my school, and I don’t want there to be even the slightest chance that people start associating the University of Texas on that plane.

Also, I don’t want to be associated with that culture of cheating. We had our fill of that in the old SWC, and I don’t want that aura around our school, and I don’t want to subject anyone in our administration to a culture where they think we have to play that game in order to compete.

There is so much beauty because life can be so symmetrical that it gives birth to this almost silent poetry . . . (like) a girl who's terrible at grammar saying, "Mama, you raised me good," and then being pushed down a well . . .

by lnghrn53 on Sep 12, 2025 1:17 PM CDT reply actions

I think there is also the perception of what fans are in the SEC.

Which is redneck trash that cares more about their starting QB than their first born child.

As a graduate of OSU, I really do not want to be lumped in as an “SEC fan.”

Now does this stereotype apply to every SEC fan? Of course not. But like you said, the perception is out there and hundreds of thousands of fans chanting “S-E-C! S-E-C!” make it hard to debate otherwise.

by Royal John on Sep 12, 2025 7:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I also do think I would have a hard time with the SEC chant...

It is almost like all the hayseeds shine up their one-tooth then drink the koolade before the game and then go chant in unison SEC at all these games. I take it back maybe the SEC is not the place to be. LOL

That is pretty strong language coming from a bipolar catfish noodling Okie.

That show “Hillbilly Handfishin” takes place in Oklahoma ! Is this show OSU’s answer to the LHN?

Two weeks ago you jokers were cussing A&M’s move to the SEC for everything you were worth and this week you sound like two junior high kids at the mall arguing over which conference you want to go to.

You were whinning about loss of tradition, A&M is just greedy, A&M is breaking contracts, and A&M is just all about themselves. I could believe Baylor and TU coming up with this crap, but not OSU.

I thought you guys had more class than this. Tell Gundy if he will bring me some catfish filets this Saturday , I will take back that last statement.

by Aggiesrule on Sep 18, 2025 11:38 PM CDT reply actions

I'll give your intelligence the benefit of the doubt since you're an Aggie.

The point is that OU and OSU wouldn’t even be looking at different options right now had A&M not thrown a temper tantrum because their big brother gets to play with all the cool toys.
