OPPONENTS 501: Conference play is upon us

We may still get blowouts, but at least they're picking on people their own size.

Robert Mayer-USA TODAY Sports

Here's our weekly review of the Cowboys' opponents, who are still wandering around in non-conference play. That will change soon enough.

Florida State Seminoles

Record: 4-0 (ACC Atlantic, 2-0)

Last Game: vs NC State

Result: W, 56-41

Next Opponent: vs Wake Forest

National Ranking: 1

Comments:

The Seminoles spotted the Pack 17 points, then outscored them 56-24. The way their schedule lays out, that game on Oct 18 in Tallahassee against Notre Dame is looking pretty large.

Missouri State Bears (FCS)

Record: 3-1 (MVC, 0-0)

Last Game: Bye

Result: N/A

Next Opponent: vs Youngstown State

National Ranking: #24 (FCS)

Comments:

This will be a tough test for the Bears with perennial national contender and 12th ranked Youngstown State coming to town.

UTSA (University of Texas at San Antonio) Roadrunners

Record: 1-3 (Conf USA - West, 0-1)

Last Game: at Florida Atlantic

Result: L, 41-37

Next Opponent: vs New Mexico

National Ranking: NR

Comments:

This was a heartbreaking loss for the Roadrunners, as they had a 10 point lead with 7:54 remaining in the game. They'll need a win at home this week against New Mexico or the season could be down the tubes. A team many considered on the rise is suddenly in trouble.

Texas Tech Red Raiders

Record: 2-2 (Big 12, 0-1)

Last Game: at #24 Oklahoma State (Thursday night)

Result: L, 45-35

Next Opponent: at #23 Kansas State

National Ranking: NR

Comments:

After getting bombed into oblivion in Stillwater, the Red Raiders now have to go to Manhattan, where Snyder is none too pleased that his wardrobe has been invaded by the Big 12.

Iowa State Cyclones

Record: 1-3 (Big 12, 0-2)

Last Game: vs #7 Baylor

Result: L, 49-28

Next Opponent: at #21 Oklahoma State

National Ranking: NR

Comments:

The Cyclones didn't win, but gave the rest of the Big 12 hope as they put up 28 points. Things don't get any easier as they must now travel to Stillwater for a date with "Lob Stilly on Turf."

Kansas Jayhawks

Record: 2-2 (Big 12, 0-1)

Last Game: vs Texas

Result: L, 23-0

Next Opponent: at West Virginia

National Ranking: Terrible

Comments:

The Weis Era is over. Can the assistants right the ship? A trip to Morgantown is NOT what the doctor ordered.

TCU HORNED FROGS

Record: 3-0 (Big 12, 0-0)

Last Game: at SMU

Result: W, 56-0

Next Opponent: vs #4 Oklahoma

National Ranking: #25

Comments:

What has started out with hope will get tested, as the next three weeks bring OU, at Baylor, and Oklahoma State.

WEST VIRGINIA MOUNTAINEERS

Record: 2-2 (Big 12, 0-1)

Last Game: Bye

Result: N/A

Next Opponent: vs Kansas

National Ranking: NR

Comments:

Dr. Bombay prescribed the perfect elixir for coming off a loss and a bye week. Don't stumble on the way to the pharmacy.

KANSAS STATE WILDCATS

Record: 3-1 (Big 12, 1-0)

Last Game: vs UTEP

Result: W, 58-28

Next Opponent: vs Texas Tech

National Ranking: #23

Comments:

I'm still perplexed by the Big 12's move on Snyder's clothing. The Cats should take care of biz against Tech.

TEXAS LONGHORNS

Record: 2-2 (Big 12, 1-0)

Last Game: at Kansas

Result: W, 23-0

Next Opponent: vs #7 Baylor

National Ranking: NR

Comments:

The good news...you're playing in Austin this week. The bad news...Baylor is coming. More good news...Iowa State and Buffalo scored points against the Bears. More bad news...you just put up 23 points on the worst team in the conference with like 43 interceptions.

BAYLOR BEARS

Result: 4-0 (Big 12, 1-0)

Last Game: at Iowa State

Result: W, 49-21

Next Opponent: at Texas

National Ranking: #7

Comments:

You're humming along but have yet to encounter much resistance. Your defense doesn't look too scary, but UT's offense is not as good as Iowa State's.

OKLAHOMA SOONERS

Record: 4-0 (Big 12, 1-0)

Last Game: Bye

Result: N/A

Next Opponent: at TCU

National Ranking: 4

Comments:

Are the Sooners alone at the top of the Big 12? So far they are. The Frogs' defense should provide a stern test.
