Transfer Chris Olivier leads Pokes past Townson

Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY Sports

Eastern Illinois transfer Chris Oliver had 18 points, Jeffrey Carroll added 17 all in the second half, and the 3-0 Cowboys notched a 69-52 win over Towson in the first round of the Charleston Classic.

Oliver may just be what the Cowboys need this season. The Pokes are expected to struggle on the offensive side of the floor, and the 6-8 big man has double digit points to open up the first three games of the season. Phil Forte went down with an elbow injury midway through the first half, but came back to start the second half with a taped up elbow. In other injury news, Jeff Newberry hit his head hard near the end of the game, but got up under his own power and looked to be okay.

Oklahoma State will play George Mason tomorrow at noon. The Patriots knocked off Mississippi in the first round 68-62. With a win, the Cowboys will play in the championship with a potential match up against Virginia or Long Beach State.
