Twelve games in and the Oklahoma State women’s basketball team already has a season defining win.
Led by Brittney Martin’s 26 points and gritty defense, Oklahoma State upset the number four and undefeated Baylor Bears in the conference opener for both teams. The Bears came into the game 13-0 and on a five game winning streak over OSU. Baylor, who has won the past four Big 12 championships, found themselves trailing for most of the game and went down three at halftime. The Oklahoma State lead got as high as nine in the second half, but Baylor went on a late run in the fourth quarter to get within one under the six minute mark. But OSU kept their poise and never lost the lead, thanks to defense holding Baylor to 30.5 percent from the field.
If you haven’t seen Brittney Martin play this year, go watch Brittney Martin play. Martin is as good as any guard in the country and is going to make one WNBA team very happy. The senior makes shots simply nobody else can and is undoubtedly the leader of this Cowgirl team. Martin is averaging 24 points and 10 rebounds to go along with a 51 percent shooting from the field.
For Baylor, today marks the first loss since the national championship game last season. The Bears have now won 20 of their last 22 games overall. Other than the Bedlam wrestling beatdown, this might go down as the best win for the entire program for 2015.
The Cowgirls, now 11-1 (1-0) head to Ames, Iowa on Jan. 2 to face Iowa State.
