NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen Open Thread: Thursday

The first four games of the 2015 Sweet Sixteen are tonight, so let's discuss!

Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

The Sweet Sixteen starts tonight and by the end of the weekend we will have the Final Four set. So far it's been an exciting tournament with a lot of close games and more expected to come. For all the excitement of the opening weekend most of the favorites have made it to week 2. Without further ado, onto the games:

Notre Dame vs. Wichita State

This game is one of, if not the best game in the Sweet 16. Notre Dame comes in after squeaking by Northeastern in round 2 (it should be round 1 but that's another issue) and beating a very good Butler team in overtime in a very exhilarating game. Wichita State comes in after a close victory over Indiana and a statement victory over Kansas that put into perspective where both programs are going. Make sure you're in front of a screen for this one.

Wisconsin vs. North Carolina

In another exciting match-up a program on the way up meets a traditional powerhouse. This game feature potential player of the year in Frank Kaminsky for Wisconsin and a stellar guard Marcus Paige for the Tar Heels. Wisconsin, the 1 seed in the West region, coasted by Coastal Carolina (pun intended) and got by in a closer that probably comfortable game versus Oregon. The Tar Heels beat upset-minded Harvard by 2 in round 2 and handled Arkansas en route to the Sweet 16. This should be another good one. One of the best players in college basketball versus one of the best coaches.

Kentucky vs. West Virginia

In the lone game featuring a Big 12 team tonight West Virginia takes on the undefeated, team of destiny, Kentucky Wildcats. Kentucky is obviously very talented and very deep so it will be very difficult for West Virginia to pull this off. However, Kentucky has looked beatable this season and West Virginia's press could give the young Kentucky guards trouble. Kentucky routed Hampton and pulled away late from Cincinnati to get to the Sweet 16 and West Virginia beat Buffalo and surprised Maryland to make it to this point. Go Big 12!

Arizona vs. Xavier

The number 2 seed in the West has looked very good in victories over Texas Southern and Ohio State. One of the best offensive teams so far in a surprisingly offensive tournament Arizona can score with anyone. Xavier comes in upset minded after beating Ole Miss and upstart Georgia State (who took down Baylor). The Musketeers will look to slow down the scorching Wildcats.

The night cap looks to be an exciting one as well.
