We have reached what I like to call the “most wonderful time of the year!” Football and basketball (and Premiere League if you’re like me) are in full swing, as well as some other OSU related sports. This weekend wrestling, football, and mens’ and womens’ basketball all have BIG opportunities to make strong impressions in their sports. Let’s break down the weekend’s schedule.
WRESTLING
Friday: @ No. 16 OU Sooners | Norman, OK | 7:00 p.m. | TV: FSSW/FCS CENTRAL
Sunday: No. 21 Pittsburgh Panthers | Stillwater, OK | 1:00 p.m. | TV: N/A
Football isn’t the only Bedlam happening this weekend. The Cowboys and Sooners take to the mats tonight in the 174th edition of Bedlam wrestling. While OU has a dominating lead in the the football head-to-head, OSU’s is more impressive in wrestling; 137-27-10. The No. 1 ranked Cowboys have a real opportunity to start #BedlamWeekend off with a bang. The fighting John Smiths will follow Bedlam with a Sunday afternoon match against No. 21 ranked Pittsburgh. Wins over both teams would help OSU solidify their No. 1 ranking.
BASKETBALL
MENS
Saturday: @ RV/No. 22 Maryland Terrapins | College Park, MD | 8:00 p.m. | TV: BTN
It’s like dessert after the big meal of Bedlam football! OSU get’s their second chance this season to knock off a ranked team when they visit the Maryland Terrapins. This will be OSU’s first true road game of the season. While Maryland is coming off a loss to Pittsburgh in the ACC/BigTen challenge, the Terrapins feature one of the best guards in the country in Melo Trimble. The premier-guard match-up between Trimble and Juwan Evans should be one to watch Saturday night. A win here will really help come Selection Sunday.
WOMENS
Saturday: Georgia Bulldogs | Stillwater, OK | 7:00 p.m. | TV: N/A
The Cowgirls look to continue their undefeated start to the season when they take on Georgia in the ladies’ version of the Big12/SEC challenge. While Georgia isn’t currently ranked, this would be a solid resume building win over a Bulldog team that made the NCAA tournament last season. Fun fact: this will be a meeting between the two teams with the longest current home non-conference winning streaks (OSU 53 / Georgia 60).
FOOTBALL
Saturday: @ No. 9 OU Sooners | Norman, OK | 11:30 a.m. | TV: FOX
Not that the other games aren’t important, but this is the match-up of the weekend. As Cowboy fans, I think we could lose the other three games, win this one, and the weekend would be a great one! I don’t think much needs to be said here that wasn’t already covered in our Bedlam Preview post.
There are no FCS or group of 5 teams on the schedule this weekend, just four match-ups against rivals and Power 5 opponents. I see what could end up being one of the best weekends for OSU athletics in awhile. Plus, have you ever been more optimistic that OSU could win four games like this? I’m not sure I have.
It’s going to be a fun weekend!
