Recruiting Roundup - Defense

Some potential difference makers for the Cowboy defense from the 2017 class.

We are only one month removed from National Signing Day 2016, but the 2017 recruiting process for Mike Gundy and staff is well on its way.

So far, the Cowboys have verbal commitments from three prospects.

Ty Thomas, the three-star safety from Cooper HS (Lubbock, TX) was the first OSU commit (after Levi Draper de-committed last fall).

Adrian Wolford is a three-star offensive tackle from Meeker HS (Meeker, OK) who at 6-foot-5, 310 pounds could push for early reps up front.

Brendan Vaughn is an outside linebacker/safety from Forney HS (Forney, TX). He is somewhat of an unknown but still has his senior year to turn some heads. Glenn Spencer must have seen something he liked and decided to nail down Vaughn's commitment early, before other suitors came calling.

Here are some recent offered prospects and updates on the defensive recruiting trail for 2017.

Tre Brown - CB

This Union HS (Tulsa, OK) four-star prospect is the No. 3 recruit in the state of Oklahoma per 247Sports. Brown is not necessarily a "big" corner at 5-foot-10, 165 pounds, but it's his athleticism and cover-skills that have coaches around the country excited.

Brown is considered one of the top cornerbacks in the nation and should be a top priority for OSU if they feel they have a chance. The Cowboys will look to build off the momentum from a strong 2016 in-state class that included five of the top ten Oklahoma preps.

The Pokes already missed out on John Marshall's (Oklahoma City, OK) Justin Broiles who had OSU connections through 2016 signee Tramonda Moore and his current high school coach Rashaun Woods. Broiles committed to OU earlier this week.

That puts even more pressure on the Cowboys to try and land one of the top two defensive backs in the state.

Derrick Tucker -  S

The 6-foot-2.5, 210-pound safety from Manvel HS (Manvel, TX) named Oklahoma State in his Top 5 on February 29, but has since deleted that Tweet.

The incoming offers Tucker has received may shed some light as to why. Last week Tucker received an offer from Ole Miss and today he announced via Twitter that Alabama had offered him a scholarship.

The Cowboys coaching staff will need to bring their A-game to stay in consideration as this four-star continues to rise.

Oklahoma State offered a three-star defensive tackle from Bixby HS (Bixby, OK). The 6-foot-2, 285-pound high school junior also holds offers from Wyoming, Colorado State and UTSA.

It appears the new uni reveal was a hit with the in-state prospect.

Per 247Sports, Evers completed 72 tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss and four sacks, as well as one forced fumble and one recovered fumble.

Last week, the Cowboys made an offer to a defensive end from St. Thomas Aquinas HS (Overland Park, KS). The 6-foot-3, 255-pound pass-rusher also holds offers from in-state Kansas, Iowa State and Northern Illinois.

Damion Daniels - DT

The name may sound a little familiar. Daniels' older brother Darrion is about to start his sophomore season for the Pokes, after getting early reps as a true freshman. Defensive line coach Joe Bob Clements hopes the younger Daniels will have a chance for the same type of impact for the Cowboys in 2017.

Daniels, a 6-foot-1, 315-pound three-star defensive tackle from Bishop Dunne (Dallas, TX), holds a bunch offers, including Baylor, Michigan, Ole Miss, LSU and Texas per Rivals.
