Oklahoma State Wrestling: 3 Cowboys qualify for Junior World Team Trials

OSU commit Wyatt Sheets takes third, while Nick Piccininni and Tristan Moran claim fourth place at Junior Freestyle Nationals.

Four members of Oklahoma State wrestling entered the 2016 UWW Junior Freestyle Nationals in Las Vegas, and three came away a spot at the USA Junior World Team Trials.

OSU recruit Wyatt Sheets won third place at 70 kilograms and redshirt freshman Nick Piccininni (55kg) and Tristan Moran (66kg) took fourth to earn All-American status and a trip to the trials May 20-22 in Irving, Texas at the Irving Convention Center.

Joe Smith also competed in the tournament and was pinned by Vincenzo Joseph of Nittany Lion Wrestling Club at 4 minutes and 8 seconds.

Sheets recorded a 12-1 technical fall over Eric Barone, a R-Fr. Illinois, for third place. Moran and Piccininni weren't so lucky in their third-place bouts.

Moran beat Cortland Schuyler by 8-4 decision then fell to Alec Pantaleo of Michigan by 14-4 technical fall in the semifinals. In the third-place-bout, Moran was unable to rally and fell 8-5 to Griffin Parriott, a Purdue commit.

Piccininni edged Austin Assad of Michigan, 11-8, before being shutout by Gavin Teasdale, a recent Iowa commit, 10-0 in the semifinals. Piccinini drew another future Iowa wrestler this time in Iowa State commit Austin Gomez, who held off Piccininni for a 17-10 victory.
