The former Oklahoma State national champion and 2012 Olympic bronze medalist outscored his opponents 28-4 en route to a first place finish at the Pan American Championships in April in Frisco, Texas. He also went 1-1 at the U.S. Olympic Trials. He recorded a 14-4 technical fall over Joe Colon before falling to Tony Ramos on criteria in the semifinals.

The other five Americans ranked are top-ranked Jordan Burroughs (74kg), No. 2 Kyle Snyder (97kg), No. 5 James Green (70kg), No. 13 Tervel Dlagnev (125kg) and No. 15 Aaron Pico (70kg).
