CRFF Roundtable: Omaha Edition

Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

Omaha!!! The Cowboys are rollin' and we're fired up. We hope you enjoy and want to hear your thoughts on each question below. Go Pokes!

What’s been your biggest takeaway from the Cowboys’ CWS run, so far?

Phillip

Holliday is one hell of a coach. The decision to make Buffet a starter has gotten this team to where it is and I'm not sure this isn't one of Holliday's weaker teams. Yet here we are, one win from the Championship series.

Robert

Pitching...DAMN

Austin

The mental toughness of this team (especially the pitching staff). Our bats have not shown up, and yet, we are still finding ways to win.

Jake

Good pitching beats good hitting every time.

Christopher

How well-suited this team's style of play is for TD Ameritrade Park. Not many runs being scored so far in this CWS, not many balls find their way over that wall (particularly in center). Being a team built around pitching and not dependent on the long ball is a huge plus.

Gallagher

The pitching and defense has been performing ridiculously well. What else is there to say?

Kyle

The growth of this team over the last couple of years. It seems as if a lot of these guys have been growing right along with Josh Holliday. Guys like Donnie Walton, Conor Costello and Corey Hassel have been been huge.

Think back to their regional and super regional outings over the last couple of years. I think those teams might have had more overall talent but this team is just tough as nails and has a confidence that only comes from experience.

If Rob Walton gets another head coaching offer, does Holder back the truck up or what?

Seriously though, how important has he been?

Phillip

I have to wonder if Rob Walton really wants to be a head coach again. He will get a raise after this season (HE HAS TO!) Yes his son is done after this season, but does he want to be a head coach again? A great opportunity with a good team could tempt him, but I don't see him running off to just any school.

Robert

Even if they win a National Championship, Boone only backs up the truck for football.

Austin

Rob Walton is of huuuuuuuuge importance to the ball team. He will get an offer from somebody. When he does, Holder should invite Rob into his office and hand him a brief case with a bajillion dollars inside of it, and say "I'll see you in the Fall."

Jake

This team would not be where it is without the wizardry of Rob Walton. With that being said, I don't think you ever need to "back up the truck" for an assistant coach.

Christopher

It's not a question of if Walton gets an offer, it's just a matter of where and how much. Holder has to see the direction this ship is heading and he has to see how vital Walton has been to that. Pay the man.

Gallagher

If Holder wants to get serious about baseball he'll keep him around.

Kyle

I don’t think Rob Walton’s impact can be overstated. He seems to know the exact right buttons to push with his guys. I don’t see him leaving. He gave up a HC job to come back here.

On the other side, how do you see OSU’s offense faring going forward? You gotta think the Pokes will need to score more than one run a game.

Phillip

Our pitching has been amazing, but eventually we are going to have to score more runs. The teams on the other side of the bracket have some real offense and some REAL hitters. I like our pitching staff against any team in the field, but 1 run isn't going to cut it forever.

Robert

I said before this whole post-season thing started that offense would be problematic. Didn't think pitching would go scorched earth on everyone.

Austin

Who knows if our bats will come around. We haven't been a great hitting team this season, and I don't particularly think we are going to turn that around in Omaha. We just have to hope for timely hitting.

Jake

The offense hasn't been overpowering but they have provided timely hitting and run production. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Christopher

My hope is that, as we get further into this tournament, other teams' pitching staffs wear down and we're able to produce more. OSU has pitching depth, they've used very few guys through two games, and they've positioned themselves to get the maximum amount of rest so far. Hopefully we start to see the grind of the CWS taking a toll on other pitching staffs.

Gallagher

In theory, yes. But we can ride our pitching to a national championship.

Kyle

I would like to see the bats wake up a bit. While the pitching staff and defense have been amazing, it only takes one big play to change a game. You’d like to give them a little cushion.
