Cowgirl Tennis Get Rematch With Stanford

Oklahoma State can avenge their National Championship game loss

Tennis: Hall of Fame ITA Invitational Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports

Last season was Oklahoma State’s best chance at getting a National Championship in a womens’ sport in school history. Unfortunately, the Cowgirl Tennis team lost in the title match last season to Stanford.

This Friday, they get a shot at revenge.

The No. 5 ranked Cowgirls are heading to Lake Nova, Florida to face No. 4 Stanford in a College MatchDay event. Hosted by the United States Tennis Association, the GameDay events matchup some of the best men’s and women’s collegiate tennis teams throughout the year.

Last year, Oklahoma State built up a 3-1 lead in the National Championship, before Stanford won the final three matches to take the title. While a disappointing finish, it was a major achievement and huge step forward for the Oklahoma State program. (You should read our own Christopher Snodgress’s great piece about the rise of OSU’s tennis program.)

So far this season, No. 5 Oklahoma State is 8-1 with six shutout victories, and wins over No. 19 Ole Miss and No. 8 California. The Cowgirls also feature six players currently listed in the Top 90 of the ITA rankings, with Viktoriya Lushkova leading the way at No. 10 overall.

No. 4 Stanford enters the match at 2-0 and has four singles players in the Top 75 of the ITA rankings, with No. 13 Melissa Lord at the top.

First serve for this Friday’s match is set for 6 p.m. ET and is available to watch on ESPN3. For more on the UTSA College Matchday event, visit HERE.
