In a surprising move today, Oklahoma State announced it was naming Mike Boynton the new head basketball coach.
Boynton, an assistant at OSU last year under Brad Underwood has no previous head coaching experience.
Oklahoma State fans were stunned by the news, as most of us (myself included) expected a big name or someone with previous head coaching experience to by hired. They also seem... not pleased.
WTF. Is this a sick joke? https://t.co/gnqGEUMBuo

We hired the guy who has been Underwood's assistant for years... what stops him from doing the same shit to us in a year

Holder is going to have a LOT of explaining to do...
This hire confirms 1.Don't want to spend money on a coach 2.Are a steppingstone job 3. Do not have the job fans think we do. #Footballschool

The key commonality with both Oklahoma State and also Cal. Money. Didn’t want to invest the money to get big-name coaches.

Mike Holder is that guy who gets broken up with, then asks out her best friend.
— Kyle Fredrickson (@kylefredrickson) March 24, 2017
At least she said yes.
It's safe to assume Holder is not particularly committed to basketball. https://t.co/hP04dEX9E8

Holder knew exactly what the students and alumni wanted him to do so he did the opposite pic.twitter.com/4rOVxutqZc

If Mike Holder's goal was to look like an AD that has no idea what he's doing, he's succeeded in spades. Because it's obvious he does not.

...and just when fans were starting to show up to games again...

Why did we hire Eddie Fogler again?
FYI - Eddie Fogler was hired by Oklahoma State to find Mike Boynton Jr. — who happened to be sitting in the office at Oklahoma State.
— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanESPN) March 24, 2017
Oh... that’s why.
Eddie Fogler coached Mike Boynton Jr. at South Carolina. Was the search firm that just helped get him hired at Oklahoma State.

Desmond Mason WOULD have had a good coaching staff....
I wish OK STATE lots of luck! Thank you Coach Chuck Person, Josh Oppenheimer, Penny Hardaway and the other that were committed to the move!

Those on the #BringDougHome bus were not pleased.
We passed on the guy with no head coaching experience for a guy with no head coaching experience

Gottlieb - Alum, giving up a sweet job to come, has no plan to ever leave, 0 years as a HC
— JC (@jcinok) March 24, 2017
Boynton - Underwood, will leave, 0 years as a HC
If you would have told me yesterday "OSU will hire someone with zero head coaching experience" this is not what I would have envisioned.

Overall it’s been a pretty rough Orange Friday....
Not a good Orange Friday.... pic.twitter.com/uZsJrHuZ0Y

On the other hand, maybe it’s not such a bad hire...
So excited for this program! Oklahoma State basketball is in good hands!
— Phil Forte (@PhilForte13) March 24, 2017
Surprised. But it's not as crazy as it looks. He should have replaced Underwood at SFA. Very talented young coach & recruiter. Evans stays? https://t.co/oZddjTAbZZ

Mike Boynton is OSU's next basketball coach. I'm told he knocked his interview out of the park. Good chance to retain players and recruits
— John Helsley (@jjhelsley) March 24, 2017
...and our own staff did have some good points...
If you're going to not go the games because the coach isn't who you wanted........ good riddance.
— Cade Webb (@CWebb_CRFF) March 24, 2017
I was on the #BringDougHome train like a lot of students. Now, it's time to support whoever becomes the next head coach!

We will have more news and thoughts about the hiring of Mike Boynton in the coming days here on CRFF.
