Recruiting Roundup: Making the Cut

Oklahoma State is in the running for three talented players

Recruiting never stops for college athletics, especially in the off-season. Oklahoma State coaches are hard at work right now trying to bring in the next class of players to don the orange and black.

The recruiting roundup is our way of tallying up all the latest offers and visits by potential Cowboys.

It’s been awhile since we did one of these, but with some potentially big news this week, it’s time to check in on OSU’s football and recruiting efforts.

2019 Outside Linebacker Marcel Brooks

Marcel Brooks

Oklahoma State made the cut for 2019 4-star outside linebacker Marcel Brooks. The 6-foot-3, 200 pounder from Flower Mounds, Texas announced his top 13 schools on twitter on Monday. The list included OSU, TCU, OU, Penn State, Texas A&M, Florida, Baylor, Alabama, Texas, LSU, Florida State, Oregon, and Clemson. As of now, 247Sports has the Longhorns as the overwhelming favorite to land Brooks.

At this point a top 13 doesn’t tell us much. Two of his top teams, Oregon and Florida State, offered him one and two days before he released his list. Also, he only has 15 reported offers and Alabama, who made the list, isn’t one of them. Still it’s always good to know you at least have a chance. It would just be nice if OSU could make it past the cut stage and actually land some more of these 4-star recruits.

2018 JUCO Cornerback Delrick Abrams Jr.

Delrick Abrams Jr.

OSU has made the final cut for 2018 JUCO cornerback Delrick Abrams Jr. Abrams is a 6-foot-3, 180 pound CB who currently plays for Independence Community College.

Joining OSU in the final three are Colorado and Mississippi State. Teams will know his decision in just a few days, as he’s announced he will commit this Friday, July 14th

During his sophomore season at Independence CC, Abrams totaled 30 tackles including three TFLs, three pass breakups, and three interceptions. However, while he plays CB right now, he’s expected to be moved to safety if he commits to Oklahoma State.

As of now, OSU has two commitments at the safety position in Kanion Williams and Jarrick Bernard.

We’ll let you know what Abrams decides on Friday when he makes his announcement.

In the meantime, check out his highlights.

2018 Offensive Tackle Darrell Simpson

Darrell Simpson

2018 4-star Offensive Tackle prospect Darrell Simpson released his top-8 last week, a list that included OSU, TCU, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, LSU, Arkansas, OU, and Ohio State.

The 6-foot-7, 310 pound Texas native narrowed his list down from 21 offers, that also included Oregon, Michigan, Florida, Colorado, and Georgia, among others. As of now, 247Sports has the Sooners as the overwhelming favorite to land Simpson.

A player of Simpson’s talent level would certainly be welcome at OSU, however with five offensive linemen already committed for 2018, and OSU the favorites to land one more in John Bolding III, I don’t see Simpson committing to the Cowboys.

On the other hand, this is just another example of the job Josh Henson is doing on the recruiting trail.

2017 Defensive End Brock Martin

2017 Oklahoma State signee Brock Martin was named the Keith Haney Auto Group Defensive Player of the Year last week. The Oklahoma committed to OSU in May 2016 and signed in February.

During his four years playing for Oologah, Martin totalled 439 tackles and 52 sacks. Also among those receiving awards was fellow OSU signee, 3-star quarterback Malcom Rodriguez who won the The Key Personnel Boys Athlete of the Year.

2018 JUCO Defensive Tackle Tayland Humphrey

Tayland Humphrey

One of Oklahoma State’s top targets, 2018 4-star JUCO defensive tackle Tayland Humphrey was named a preseason JUCO All-American 1st-team by Gridiron.

As we’ve talked about before, Oklahoma State is the current favorite to land Humphrey and his brother John Bolding III. GridironRR ranks Humphrey as the top JUCO prospect for 2018.
