After inclement weather kept delaying their home opener, the Cowboys were finally able to get two games in against Marist on Saturday and Sunday. They took care of business winning both of those games.
Saturday (2/24): The Cowboys got the scoring going early in this game, scoring two runs in the first inning that would make it hard for the Red Foxes to come back. Matt Kroon hit an RBI double that sent Andrew Rosa home and Johnathan Littell hit a ground out RBI that sent Colin Simpson to third base and Kroon across home plate. Marist cut into the Cowboy lead in the third with Chris Tracz hit a home run to right field to make the score 2-1. The Cowboys answered back with a homer of their own two innings later in the fifth with Matt Kroon would hit on to right center. That would score two and bring the score to 4-2 Cowboys. Marist would cut into that lead in the 6th when Tracz would strike again with an RBI to bring in two runs and make it a one run ball game. In the bottom of sixth Colin Simpson would answer back and hit an RBI to bring in Cameron Dobbs for a 5-3 score that they would end the ballgame with.
Cowboy starter Johnathan Heasley would pitch 5 2⁄3 innings and gave up all three of Marist’s runs on 5 hits and 3 walks. Heasley would end his day with a career high nine strikeouts. Joe Lienhard came in and pitched 1 1⁄3 inning and didn’t give up a run on two hits ans had a strikeout. Reza Aleaziz came in a pitched an inning and had a strike out no hits no runs and not walks. Carson Teel closed and got the save had no hits, no runs, no walks and a strikeout.
Marist starter Skyler Pichardo pitched four innings with 3 runs, 2 hits and 4 walks. Conor McNamara came in a pitched 1 1⁄3 inning with three hits, two runs and no walks. Mike Coss would come in and pitch 2 2⁄3 innings and have two strikeouts.
Sunday (2/25):
This game was much like the first one. The Cowboys coming out to an early lead and the Red Foxes trying to bounce back.
Colin Simpson hit and RBI double in the first inning that brought in Andrew Rosa to score. Then Johnathan Littell hit a homer to left center to make the score 2-0. Matt Kroon would reach on a fielder’s choice in the second for an RBI that brought in Jake Taylor and make the score 3-0. Marist would get their scoring started in the fourth when Jordan Roper hit a single to right field for an RBI. They would score again in the fifth on an RBI from Chris Tracz to get to the 3-2 final score.
Cowboy starter Mitchell Stone had no runs, three hits and three walks in his 3 innings. And Marist starter Charlie Jera had 8 hits, 3 runs and two walks in his 5 innings.
Ben Leeper for the Cowboys made his first appearance in nearly two seasons. He went 2+ innings, giving up one hit, no runs, a strikeout, and three walks in his two innings. Carson Teel nailed down the save going 1 1⁄3 innings.
Next up the Cowboys take on Little Rock in Allie P. at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
