With Oklahoma State’s move to the 4-2-5 defense — plus the constant quality of quarterbacks in the Big 12 — the need for quality safeties and cornerbacks is stronger than ever. In the last two days, the Cowboy staff has made offers to two 2020 corners; fast-rising Jalen Kimber and Daran Branch.
Kimber, a 6-foot 168-pound defensive back from Arlington, Texas, currently has six offers with OSU’s and one from Texas A&M coming on Tuesday. They join TCU (who offered just four days earlier), Baylor, Houston, and SMU on the list. He is also garnering interest from Texas where he attended longhorn camp last Friday, the day after a visit to Oklahoma State.
It will be hard for the Cowboys to pull Kimber out of the state of Texas. He told Damon Sayles at 247Sports, that his visit to College Station on Saturday was one of his best of the year.
”After visiting Texas A&M, it’s definitely high on my list,” said Kimber.
That being said, he reportedly impressed the Cowboy staff during his visit last weekend. And after looking at his highlight video, it’s easy to see why.
The kid is fast and seems to stay with the play pretty consistently, both great attributes for someone playing corner. He’s not polished, but as someone entering his junior year, that’s not a big concern.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys made an offer on Wednesday to three-star Amrite, Louisiana corner Daran Branch.
Branch, the 30th-ranked corner in the 2020 class by 247Sports, has put together a pretty solid list of offers so far. Joining the Cowboys are Ole Miss, Auburn, Kansas, Memphis, Tulane, and Louisiana Tech.
Branch made a visit to Lawrence, Kansas last weekend and reportedly has the Jayhawks high on his list.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound DB is long, rangy, and has a good frame. He shows some solid skill as a run blocker, something that is super important in Jim Knowles 4-2-5 scheme. He also shows some skill in pass coverage.
