Breaking Down Week 3 of the AP Poll: Cowboys at No. 24

The Cowboys still have work to do convincing voters

NCAA Football: South Alabama at Oklahoma State Rob Ferguson-USA TODAY Sports

The latest Associated Press Top-25 poll is out and.. well will you look at that; Oklahoma State is ranked for the first time this season.

The Cowboys come in at No. 24 one spot ahead of Michigan State and one behind fellow previously unranked team Arizona State.

31 of the 61 voters had OSU in their polls this week.

Week Ranking Lowest Highest
Preseason NR NR 21 (2)
2 NR NR 21 (3)
3 24 NR 18 (1)

The Cowboys still have a lot of voters to convince with 30 leaving OSU unranked. A win over Boise State on Saturday would likely do the trick, with the Broncos currently ranked 17th in the country and ranked in every AP voters poll.

To be honest, I would have been ok with OSU not being ranked this week. They haven’t done anything so far that guarantees they are one of the 25 best teams in the country.

Yes they are 2-0, but with wins over an FCS team and South Alabama. That they are only one spot behind Arizona State who knocked off a still-ranked Michigan State should validate my point a bit. Heck, Houston and Maryland are both 2-0 and with better wins. Even Hawaii, with 3-0 wins over better competition, might have a stronger argument.

But as I said that before, that can all change this coming Saturday when the Cowboys welcome Boise State to Stillwater. Beat them, and move on up. Lose? And OSU will be back on the outside looking in.
