It was an up and down week for the Cowboys as they had their last few non-conference games of the 2019 season. They took two out of three games against Southeastern Louisiana this past weekend in Allie P. Reynolds before losing an away game to Dallas Baptist on Tuesday.
Friday (3/15)- Game 1 vs. Southeastern Louisiana: Oklahoma State 9 Southeastern Louisiana 0
It was a fantastic day for Jensen Elliott as he pitched seven scoreless innings in the series opener. He also had five strikouts during his outing and allowed just one hit. Elliott would get the win and move to 2-0 on the season.
Behind homes plate Trevor Boone had himself an evening with three hits, two runs and four (!!!) RBIs. Cade Cabbiness and Max Hewitt each had two hits on the day with Hewitt scoring a run. Andrew Navigato added two runs to the Cowboys’ total. Colin Simpson, Bryce Carter, Carson McCusker and Christian Funk all came across home plate as well.
Back to the mound, Peyton Battenfield would pitch an inning with a strike out and Ben Leeper would close with an inning of work. He would face three batters with no runs, no hits and no errors.
Saturday(3/16)- Game 2 vs. Southeastern Louisiana: Oklahoma State 5 Southeastern Louisiana 1
Cody Grosse would hit a home run for the Lions in the first inning but that would the only scoring that would happen for Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday.
Hueston Morrill would contribute big for the Pokes on Saturday with three hits and two runs in four at bats. Andrew Navigato had a great game as well with four RBIs and 2 runs including an home run in the first inning. Christian Funk would hit the other RBI to bring in the fifth run.
On the mound Joe Lienhard would get the win for the Cowboys. He moves to 2-1 on the season after pitching 1 2⁄3 innings with two hits and no runs. Jake Lyons started on the bump for the Pokes and pitched 4 1⁄3 innings and gave up three hits as well as the lone run scored by the Lions. Logan Gragg came in to relieve and pitched 1 2⁄3 innings with a strike out. Brady Basso came in after that and pitched 2⁄3 innings with a strikeout and a walk. Peyton Battenfield would come in to close and pitched 2⁄3 innings with two strikeouts.
Sunday (3/17): Game 3 vs. Southeastern Louisiana: Southeastern Louisiana 5 Oklahoma State 3
OSU starting pitcher Mitchell Stone only pitched 1 1⁄3 innings in Sunday’s loss after giving up three runs and a hit.He would end the game as the losing pitcher and go 1-1 on the season. Stone would also record three walks in his outing and recorded just one strikeout. Brett Standlee would come in after that and pitch 2 2⁄3 innings with two hits and a run given up. Standlee would have 4 strikeouts and a walk. Parker Scott would come in and pitch for two inning with a run, a hit a walk and two strikeouts. C.J. Varela, Nate Peterson and Ben Leeper would also pitch an inning each. Varela would record 2 strikeouts and Leeper would walk two batters.
Behind the plate, Christian Funk seems to have gotten his groove back with three hits and three RBIs. Those three RBIs accounted for all the runs the Cowboys scored.
Tuesday (3/19): Dallas Baptist: Dallas Baptist 7 Oklahoma State 5
A 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second inning as the Cowboys struggled on defense Tuesday night in Dallas.
Carson McCusker had two RBIs, two hits and a run scored. Cade Cabiness also had two hits and a run scored. Hueston Morrill, Bryce Carter and Max Hewitt would hit the RBIs to score the Cowboys’ other runs.
The Patriots would score four runs in the bottom of the second and score three more in the bottom of the eight to win the game. The Patriots would score on a error by shortstop Andrew Navigato in the bottom of the second.
On the mound, starter C.J Varela would pitch 1 2⁄3 innings with three hits, four walks, four runs and two strikeouts before Brett Standless came in for him. Standlee would pitch 2 1⁄3 innings with a walk and a strikeout. Peyton Battenfield would take the loss and move to 3-2 on the year.He gave up three runs, two hits and a walk while recording a strikeout. Joe Lienhard and Brady Basso would also relieve pitching 2 inning and 2⁄3 innings respectively.
Next the Cowboys will come back to Allie P. Reynolds this weekend to open Big 12 play with the Kansas State Wildcats.
