Austin Eckroat named an All-American

The Golf Coaches Association of America announced Thursday that Oklahoma State sophomore Austin Eckroat earned third-team All America status. He is the third Cowboy to be named an All-American this year; Matthew Wolff and Viktor Hovland made the first-team a month ago. Senior on last year’s team Zach Bauchou earned honorable mentions.

Hovland and Wolff’s pro debuts

Speaking of Hovland and Wolff, their professional debuts at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut has been smooth thus far. Hovland, the low amateur at last week’s US Open and at the Masters in April, shot a three under 67 and is five shots behind leader Keagan Bradley, while Wolff finished the first day of the tournament even par.

The 2018 U.S. Amateur champ, Oklahoma State standout and low amateur at both the Masters and U.S. Open made five birdies against two early bogeys.

This wasn’t Hovland’s first PGA Tour event, but it was his first start playing for money, which he’s doing his best not to think about.

“I think instead of thinking about money I’m thinking more about, ‘OK, I want to have some sort of status for next year.’ That’s kind of the goal,” he said. “Obviously, this means I’m going to be making more money if I’m playing good, but it is a little different because I feel like I have to capitalize more on these starts.”

Wolff, this year’s NCAA Division I individual champion, struggled early in his round, making the turn in 2 over, but fought back with two back-nine birdies, including one at the last, to shoot even par. golfchannel.com

Daniel Cormier named a finalist for ESPY

Former Oklahoma State wrestler Daniel Cormier has been nominated for the Best MMA Fighter Award at the upcoming Espy’s on July 10, after a year in which he held the light heavyweight and heavyweight titles simultaneously.

Nominated in the new Best MMA Fighter category this year are UFC athletes Daniel Cormier, Amanda Nunes, Henry Cejudo, and Israel Adesanya. Of the four, Adesanya is the only one to not have held two UFC titles simultaneously in the last year. Adesanya currently holds the interim middleweight title.

Cormier won the UFC heavyweight title last June with a first-round knockout of Stipe Miocic. At the time, Cormier was also the light heavyweight champion. He would later successfully defend the heavyweight title with a submission of Derrick Lewis at UFC 230. mmafighting.com
