It’s high noon...
Adrianna Franch faces racist insults at NWSL game:
Former Cowgirl Soccer goal keeper dealt with something no one should have to at Friday night’s Utah Royals-Portland Thorns game. Franch was taunted by an opposing fan with racial language. SB Nation wrote a great article with details of the incident and how we can do better.
Then there’s the league itself, which appears to have been caught flat-footed by this incident, with no apparent policy in place for the public to read. NWSL thankfully may have a much lower incidence of racist behavior (that we know of) among fans to which they must respond, but why isn’t there general league policy in place for bad behavior that reaches the level required for disciplinary action? Surely a sports league could anticipate that a fan might someday do something objectionable that would require the intervention of the team and removal from a stadium. And sad to say, racism is clearly one of the obvious categories of bad behavior for which you’d want a response. {SB Nation}
Cowgirl Soccer’s Kimberly Rodriguez named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week:
After helping her team go 2-0 over the weekend, Kimberly Rodriguez earner a conference award as the top defender.
A junior defender for the Cowgirls, Rodriguez played all 180 minutes in helping OSU post shutout wins over Central Arkansas and Saint Louis and remain unbeaten with a 4-0-1 mark. She recorded three assists on the weekend to bring her season total to four, which ranks second in the Big 12. Rodriguez had a pair of assists in Friday’s win over UCA, recording those on OSU’s first and third goals in the match. On Sunday, she collected an assist on a corner kick on the Cowgirls’ initial goal against Saint Louis. With Rodriguez helping anchor the defensive back line, OSU held its two opponents to a combined 10 shots on the weekend, just four of those on goal, and the Cowgirls have now posted shutouts in four of their five matches this season while allowing only two goals on the year. {okstate.com}
Jelani Woods flourishing in new role:
Former quarterback turned cowboy back Jelani Woods is fitting into a new role this season. He appreciates the opportunity he’s been given.
“I’ve got a love for the game. I wanted to be on the field and I wanted to help the team.”
During the same weekend of the Antonio Brown fiasco, as the NFL’s ultimate diva schemed himself out of Oakland and onto the New England Patriots’ roster, Woods said this: “I wanted to be on the field and I wanted to help the team.”
How refreshing is that? {Tulsa World}
