The Cowboys led off Week 2 of their schedule with a win over University of Arkansas Little Rock on Wednesday before taking two games in a three-game series against Wright State.
Wednesday 2/20 - UA Little Rock:
The Cowboy bats were hot with eight runs on seven hits in a 8-3 victory in the final home opener at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. Andrew Navigato scored three runs and was patient at the plate with two walks. Bryce Carter continued his strong start with two hits, three RBIs and a walk. Ryan Benavidez, Trace Jordan and Miguel Soto had the three runs for UALR. The Trojans had a eight total hits, though.
Jake Lyons got the win on the bump with two innings of one-hit ball, with one walk and three strikeouts. Starter C.J. Varela pitched four innings and gave up four hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
Friday 2/22 - Wright State:
OSU’s defense didn’t let WSU across home plate in a 4-0 win in the series opener. Dylan Gardner hit a RBI double to right-center field for Bryce Carter to score a run. Then Cade Cabbiness knocked a RBI single out to left field for Gardner to score and Christian Funk smacked a double to right-center to score Colin Simpson and Trevor Boone.
Jensen Elliott picked up his first win of the season with six scoreless innings of four-hit ball and five strikeouts. Joe Lienhard struck out three in two innings. Bear Bellomy, who took the loss, and Tristian Haught totaled seven hits given up for WSU.
Saturday 2/23 - Wright State:
There were runs a plenty in Game 2 in the Cowboys’ 17-5 win. The Gap Band fired off five times.
Christian Funk homered twice, while Andrew Navigato, Carson McCusker and Alix Garcia each hit one out of the park. Garcia had a fantastic game with two runs, three hits and four RBIs. Funk clubbed three hits, three runs and five RBIs.
Logan Gragg pitched 2 1⁄3 innings and gave up four runs on as many hits and walked four as well. He did have two strikeouts. Peyton Battenfield took over on the mound for 3 2⁄3 innings, and only allowed one run and struck out four and walked three.
Zane Collins took the loss after giving up five earned runs on four hits and walking four.
Sunday 2/24 - Wright State:
The Cowboys apparently used all their steam Saturday and didn’t have enough in the tank to pull off a win Sunday as they lost 5-4.
WSU started off the first with a fielder’s choice from Peyton Burdick that brought in Damon Dues for the score. The Cowboys defense gave up more runs in the fourth, seventh and ninth innings. Hueston Morrill tried to get the Pokes back in it with two runs and two hits. Bryce Carter and Carson McCusker added two runs for the Cowboys.
Joe Lienhard took the loss after giving up one run on two hits in one inning of work. Starter Mitchell Stone allowed three runs on as many hits in four innings.
