Oklahoma State head basketball coach Mike Boynton is NOT going to take it easy on his talented 2020 squad in the non-conference.
OSU and Virginia Tech will begin a home-and-home basketball series next fall, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports. The Cowboys will travel to Blacksburg, Virginia, during the 2021-22 campaign.
Rothstein also notes game one could be at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City. I think we’d all love to see it at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, but I’m just happy to see a game like this on the schedule.
OSU is 0-4 in the all-time series — which has two neutral site games — against Virginia Tech. The Cowboys fell 56-51 to the Hokies on Nov. 26, 2010, at the Anaheim Convention Center in California and 59-57 on Nov. 25, 2011, at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Oklahoma State vs. Virginia Tech series history
2012-13: VTech 81, No. 15 OSU 71 (Blacksburg)
2011-12: VTech 67, OSU 61 (Stillwater)
2011-12: VTech 59, OSU 57 (New York City)
2010-11: VTech 56, OSU 51 (Anaheim)
Virginia Tech went 16-16 this past season, the first for head coach Mike Young. The team is loaded with youth and is set to return four of their top five scorers and three of their top four rebounders. While they are losing their top player in Landers Nolley to the transfer portal, Tech is adding a player OSU fans will be familiar with; former Kansas State point guard Cartier Diarra.
This game will add to an already difficult schedule for the Cowboys. With four neutral site games already on the schedule it would be nice to see this one on Eddie Sutton court as opposed to at the Peake. But it certainly won’t hurt to have a quality opponent to face off close to home.
Oklahoma State 2020 Schedule (so far)
Nov. 13 vs. Louisville | Armed Forces Classic
Nov. 19, 20, 22 Charleston Classic (participating schools)
Dec. 12 at Wichita State
TBD vs. Virginia Tech
TBD (probably Jan. 30) vs. TBD | Big 12 / SEC Challenge
TBD vs. TBD | Big 12 / Big East Alliance
One other scheduling note to pass along. This one is unconfirmed and hasn’t been reported by anyone whose word we’re going to take as gospel, but OSU could potentially play against Iona and new head coach Rick Pitino next season.
To clarify: Iona-Ok St at MSG is in the works, but not 100% a done deal just yet. https://t.co/NDzLKKW417
