Breaking down AP Top 25 preseason poll: Oklahoma State is consensus Top 25 team

The Cowboys made an appearance on every voters’ ballot.

The Associated Press’ Top 25 preseason poll is out and Oklahoma State made the cut landing at No. 15.

While the preseason poll is a little weird, as it includes teams from conferences that will not play football this fall, it does an important job of telling us what AP voters actually think about OSU.

But if you take a closer look, it’s not just that OSU premiered in the Top 25 ahead of the 2020 season, it’s that every voter had them on their ballot.

Week Ranking Highest Lowest Highest %
Preseason 15 9 (1 vote) 23 (1 vote) 14 (10 votes)

Or, for a more colorful look...

OSU is often ranked in the preseason by voters, but it’s not often you don’t see a single voter who has them outside the Top 25.

Conor ONeill of Winston-Salem Journal had the Cowboys at No. 9 — their highest ranking — and Brooks Kubena of The Advocate had them at No. 10 for OSU’s other lone top-10 vote.

While Adam Zucker of CBS Sports Network had the Cowboys at the their lowest ranking of 23. Honestly, perusing his full ballot, it’s hard to have any real complaints about who he put above the Cowboys.

Preseason polls are pretty pointless, and this one more so than others what with so many teams ranked that won’t play this year.

But that’s what makes the No. 15 ranking so sweet. So while it will be really fun to see OSU move up at least four spots once teams from the Big Ten and Pac-12 are removed from the equation, it’s good to know how voters really feel about the Cowboys, if all things were as they should be.
