Oklahoma State’s Austin Eckroat is one of 20 golfers on the preseason watch list for the Fred Haskins Award, which is awarded annually to the most outstanding men’s college golfer, as voted on by players, coaches and media members. It’s the equivalent to college football’s Heisman Trophy.
The watch list includes 20 players competing this fall and 10 others to watch in the spring.
Nine of players competing this fall are from the Big 12, with Texas having the most with three. Oklahoma and Texas Tech each have two and Cooper Dossey is Baylor’s lone representative. Pepperdine’s William Mouw is the only player not from the Big 12 or Southeastern Conference on the watch list.
Eckroat, a second-team All-American by the Golf Coaches Association of American and Golfweek Magazine last year, was 2-2-1 at the Big 12 Match Play Tournament. He halved his match with Baylor’s Cooper Dossey and had wins over Oklahoma’s Quade Cummings and Kansas’ Jeff Doty.
Matthew Wolff became the eighth OSU golfer to win the Haskins Award in 2019. Other Cowboys to win the award include Pablo Martin (2006), Hunter Mahan (2003), Charles Howell III (2000), Scott Verplank (1986), Willie Wood (1982), Bob Tway (1981) and Lindy Miller (1978).
