Charles Howell III Finishes In The Top Ten At The Valspar Championship

What a tournament. You couldn't have asked for anything more as a golf fan in terms of excitement this week. As a Cowboy fan, however, there wasn't quite as much to be excited about.

It took extra holes to determine the winner this week with Jordan Spieth eventually coming out on top after a birdie on the third playoff hole.  At 21 Spieth became just the fourth player ever to win twice on Tour before his 22nd birthday.  It was just another reminder that the young players on Tour are staging a massive takeover of the sport.

Unfortunately, Cowboy fans didn't have much to cheer for on the weekend.  Former Pokes Morgan Hoffmann and Bo Van Pelt missed the cut after firing scores of 76 and 78, respectively, on Friday.  It wasn't all bad, however.  Charles Howell III continued his excellent play this year shooting an impressive 68 on Sunday that vaulted him into a tie for 10th, his third top-10 finish of the year.  With his made cut streak still intact, he is quietly climbing up the FedEx Cup Standings and could surprise some people come playoff time.

A look back at predictions:

  • All three Cowboys see the weekend- A big whiff on this one...Cowboys were 1 for 3 this week.

  • Charles Howell III in Top 5 in Driving Distance- Chuck finished 16th in driving distance this week...his driving accuracy most likely contributed to this dip hitting only 28 of 52 fairways on the week.

  • Hoffmann hole-in-one- Morgan didn't get his hole-in-one Thursday or Friday before missing the cut, however, we'll never know if he would have made one on the weekend.  My guess is yes, so I'm giving myself this one.

That puts my total for the week at 1/3 (with an asterisk).  I'll have to learn from my mistakes next week to improve on my stats for the year...which are abysmal right now.

Next up is a trip to Bay Hill for Arnie's tournament.
