Oklahoma State wrestling alum Jordan Oliver defeated Joey McKenna with a 10-0 technical fall in 2:16 to win the men’s freestyle 65-kilogram championship at Senior Nationals on Sunday at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Texas.
Oliver recorded a four-point score 5 seconds into the match with a blast double-leg takedown then added three more takedowns for the victory. He outscored his five opponents 50-0 to earn the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler honor.
Another former Cowboy in Alex Dieringer was upset 6-4 by Myles Martin in the semifinals at 86 kg. Dieringer rallied from a 3-0 deficit for a 4-3 lead in the second period, but Martin scored in the closing seconds for the win. Dieringer responded with two technical falls against Sam Brooks 10-0 in 1:50 and Brett Pfarr 10-0 in 54 seconds to take third.
The top five placewinners at each weight class qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials at Penn State on April 4-5. If an athlete in the top five had already qualified for the Trials like Dieringer and Oliver, no other athlete moved up to take that place.
Others in freestyle
Three other OSU alums also competed in freestyle at the tournament: Dean Heil (65 kg.), Eddie Klimara (57 kg.) and Derek White (97 kg.).
White dropped his quarterfinal bout 6-3 to Kollin Moore then beat Evan Hansen 8-0, but lost his next two matches 8-3 to Jacob Kasper and was pinned in 1:27 against Kevin Beazley in the seventh-place match.
Heil lost 18-8 in 3:30 to former conference rival Bryce Meredith in the second round then won two straight before falling 13-2 in 3 minutes to Evan Henderson in the consolation bracket.
Klimara went 1-2 with a 12-5 loss to Sean Russell in the opening round, then an injury default win against Cory Clark followed by a 16-5 technical fall loss to Zane Richards.
Greco-Roman
Chandler Rogers took sixth place at 87kg. He had three straight pins (:44, 1:08, 2:01) before he dropped a 5-2 decision against Jonathan Anderson in the semifinals then forfeited his next two matches.
