With the sports world shutting down a few weeks ago due to the coronavirus, former Oklahoma State walk-on basketball player Mason Cox took to Twitter to try to educate people about one sport that was still going on — Australian rules football.
Cox attended an Australian Football League talent combine in Los Angeles in 2014, and caught the eye of the legendary Collingwood club. He’s now on his second contract with the club as a forward and remains the only American currently playing in the AFL.
The AFL grabbed the attention of many American sports fans trying to find live sports to watch, including former West Virginia and Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee, who has become a media personality since his retirement in 2016. McAfee shared his newfound love for the AFL on Twitter and on his weekday radio show “The Pat McAfee Show” which led to Cox exchanging tweets with McAfee. But soon after the AFL suspended play due to the coronavirus like so many other sport leagues around the world.
Cox joined McAfee’s show Friday and highlighted the differences between Aussie rules and rugby, encouraged Americans to watch the sport and broke down everything about Australia’s favorite sport.
