Two Dan Hodge Trophy winners will face off Sept. 19 when Alex Dieringer and Bo Nickel meet in a freestyle event hosted by Nittany Lion Wrestling Club. The event will be a dual meet between the Nittany Lion WC and Michigan Regional Training Center.
Dieringer (Oklahoma State) and Nickal (Penn State) both won three individual NCAA championships and the Hodge Trophy during their collegiate careers. Dieringer won his NCAA titles at 157 pounds in 2014 and then at 165 pounds in 2015 and 2016. Nickal was a four-time finalist, with a runner-up finish to Myles Martin of Ohio State at 174 in 2016 then titles the next two years at 184 before closing out his career at 197 in 2019.
In June, Dieringer moved to the Michigan RTC in Ann Arbor, Michigan, after nine years in Stillwater, Oklahoma. He won the Bill Farrell International last November and earned top-three finishes at the U.S. Senior Nationals in December (bronze), Matteo Pellicone International in January (silver) and won the Pan-American Championships in March.
Dieringer was recently in the San Jose area at American Kickboxing Academy helping fellow OSU alum Daniel Cormier train for a UFC heavyweight championship fight.
Nickal, meanwhile, has stayed at Penn State and trained with Nittany Lion WC after his college career ended. He has one freestyle medal to his name with gold at the 2019 under-23 World Championships.
The event will be streamed on the Rokfin platform, which has subscriptions for $9.99.
