Nick Piccininni (125) won his fourth, Boo Lewallen (141) took his second and Travis Wittlake (165) grabbed his first.

Three Oklahoma State wrestlers claimed individual titles as the Cowboys won their eighth straight Big 12 Championship on Sunday at BOK Center in Tulsa.

OSU scored 147.5 team points to win by 31 points over Iowa State to match the Cowboys’ eighth-straight conference tournament titles from 1921-28. Northern Iowa took third with 111.5 points, and South Dakota State and North Dakota State round out the top five with 94 and 90.5 points, respectively.

Nick Piccininni (125), Boo Lewallen (141) and Travis Wittlake (165) all claimed titles as top seeds. Piccininni became the fifth OSU wrestler and ninth overall to be a four-time Big 12 champion and the first since his former OSU teammate Anthony Collica in 2017. Piccininni joined OSU’s Alex Dieringer (2013-16), Chris Perry (2011-14), Jordan Oliver (2010-13) and Johnny Thompson (2001-04). Lewallen claimed his second title after missing last year’s tournament with a shoulder injury. It’s Wittlake’s first Big 12 crown.

Piccininni scored a takedown with 10 seconds remaining in the first period and exchanged escapes in the next two periods and fended off several attacks late from No. 3 Alex Mackall of Iowa State for a 3-1 win. The redshirt senior Cowboy defeated Mackall with a 10-2 major decision in February in Ames.

Piccininni was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler for his performance. He’s the 10th OSU wrestler to earn the honor and first since Dieringer in 2015.

Lewallen was taken down twice and trailed 4-2 in the second period against No. 2 Henry Pohlmeyer of South Dakota State, but Lewallen responded with an escape, two takedowns of his own and a hard ride for an 8-5 win. Lewallen, a redshirt junior, had a 10-0 major decision against Pohlmeyer in January in Stillwater.

In the second OSU-ISU final match at 157, the Cowboys were the underdogs with No. 3 Wyatt Sheets against top-seed David Carr of Iowa State. Carr, a redshirt freshman, had an escape and a takedown to open the second, but Sheets, a redshirt sophomore, escaped after 53 seconds to trail 3-1 after two periods. Sheets escaped five seconds into the third, but Carr scored a takedown on a slick duck-under and locked in riding time before giving up an escape and stalling point to Sheets in a 6-4 win.

Wittlake, a true freshman, scored a takedown in each period and riding time for a decisive 8-4 victory against No. 2 Andrew Fogarty of North Dakota State.

The Cowboys scored 50.5 points in the second session to grab the lead from Iowa State.

Oklahoma State has taken the Big 12 Wrestling Championship lead from Iowa State with 111.5 points and placed four into Sunday’s final at BOK Center in Tulsa.

The Cowboys entered the second session down three points to the Cyclones, but scored 50.5 points to take a 19.5-point lead over ISU (92) heading into Sunday. Northern Iowa (90.5) jumped from fifth to third, while South Dakota State (83.5) slid one spot to fourth and North Dakota State (74.5) moved up from seventh to fifth.

OSU went 4-2 during the semifinals, including three wins with bonus points attached. Top-seeded Boo Lewallen (149) had a fall in dramatic fashion, and No. 1 Nick Piccininni (125) and No. 3 Wyatt Sheets (157) each had major decisions. Travis Wittlake (165), OSU’s third top seed, had a 10-3 decision against No. 4 Tanner Cook of South Dakota State.

Lewallen built a 6-3 first-period lead with three takedowns, but No. 4 Jarrett Degen of ISU rallied with an escape, takedown and two-point nearfall for an 8-7 lead. Lewallen took the lead with a reversal and four-point turn, but Degen slipped out and reversed him only to have Lewallen do the same and lock up a cradle for the fall at 6:18.

Lewallen will seek his second conference title when he meets No. 2 Henry Pohlmeyer of SDSU in the final. The Cowboy scored a 10-0 major decision against Pohlmeyer in the dual.

Tied 5-5 after two periods, No. 2 Jared Franek of NDSU made a poor decision to start on bottom and Sheets made him pay for it. Sheets racked up nine points with two four-point turns and a riding time point for a 14-5 major decision. Sheets will have a rematch against No. 1 David Carr of ISU, who he lost to by 14-6 major decision in the dual.

Piccininni scored a takedown in each period and a two-point nearfall in the third for a 12-1 major decision against No. 4 McGwire Midkiff of NDSU. Piccininni will try to become OSU’s sixth four-time Big 12 champion when he faces No. 3 Alex Mackall of ISU, who defeated Air Force’s Cody Phippen 7-3 in the other semifinal. Piccininni defeated Mackall with a 10-2 major decision in the dual.

Wittlake, a redshirt freshman, scored three takedowns and a turn to advance to the final against No. 2 Andrew Fogarty of NDSU. It’ll be the first meeting between the two.

Fourth-seeded Dusty Hone (141) and No. 5 Joe Smith (174) dropped their semifinal bouts by decision to the top-seeded wrestler in their bracket. Hone looked to be headed to sudden victory in his third match this season against Oklahoma’s Dom Demas, but the Sooner wrestler scored a takedown as time expired for a 3-1 win against Hone. Tied 1-1 with less than a minute remaining in the third, Northern Iowa’s Bryce Steiert stuffed Smith’s shot attempt and scored a takedown for a 4-1 victory.

Staying alive

Six-seeded Reece Witcraft (133), No. 2 Anthony Montalvo (184) and No. 5 Dakota Geer (197) all stayed alive in the consolation bracket. Montalvo and Geer both went 2-0 to advance to the consolation semifinals, while Witcraft went 1-1 to make the seventh-place match against West Virginia’s Lucas Seibert.

Montalvo pinned West Virginia’s Jackson Moomau in 2:23 then scored a takedown in sudden victory for a 5-3 win against No. 6 Darrien Roberts of OU. Montalvo will meet No. 5 Marcus Coleman of ISU in the conso semifinals. The Cowboy holds a 6-2 win over Coleman from the dual season.

Geer rallied from an early 2-0 deficit with five takedowns en route to a 13-7 win against Iowa State’s Joel Shapiro then outlasted No. 8 Cordell Eaton of NDSU for a 10-7 victory. Geer will face No. 3 Jake Woodley of OU. The Bedlam rivals split their regular-season matches.

Witcraft scored a double-leg takedown with 10 seconds remaining for a 5-3 upset against top-seeded Taylor LaMont of Utah Valley, and dropped a 16-7 major decision to Fresno State’s Lawrence Saenz, who won a scramble off a Witcraft shot attempt for a six-point swing to win the match. Witcraft blazed past Seibert in the dual with a 17-1 technical fall.

Down and out

Undersized heavyweight Austin Harris’ season ended with an 8-4 loss to No. 7 Brandon Metz of NDSU. Harris finished the season 5-12, including 3-5 in Big 12 matches.

Six Cowboys advance to the semifinals.

Oklahoma State trails Iowa State by three points for the Big 12 Championship lead after the opening session Saturday at BOK Center in Tulsa.

OSU has 61 points and six semifinalists, while ISU boasts eight in the semifinals. South Dakota State (42), Oklahoma (41) and Northern Iowa (38) round out the top five.

The Cowboys went 9-4 during the opening session with seven bonus-point victories: two falls, four technical falls and one major decision. OSU went 3-2 in the first round where No. 2 Anthony Montalvo and No. 5 Dakota Geer scored 12 points with falls at 184 and 197 pounds against Fresno State’s Hunter Cruz and Isaiah Perez.

But Montalvo and Geer both dropped their quarterfinal matches to Wyoming wrestlers to fall to the consolation bracket.

Montalvo allowed No. 7 Tate Samuelson to escape to start the third then was awarded a takedown at the edge in the final 10 seconds for a 3-2 loss. OSU coach John Smith challenge was unsuccessful. Tied 2-2 after two periods, Geer gave up an escape and a takedown for a 9-5 loss with riding time to No. 4 Stephen Buchanan.

In the quarterfinals, the Cowboys won six of eight matches with four wins having bonus-points attached. Top-seeded Nick Piccininni (125), Boo Lewallen (149) and Travis Wittlake (165) and No. 3 Wyatt Sheets (157) posted technical falls, and No. 4 Dusty Hone (141) scored two takedowns and four near fall points en route to an 11-3 major decision against Fresno State’s DJ Lloren.

Fifth-seed Joe Smith (174) went 2-0 in the first session with 4-3 decision against North Dakota State’s Luke Weber and a 3-2 win in sudden victory over No. 4 Kimball Bastian of Utah Valley.

In the opening round, sixth-seed Reece Witcraft (133) gave up two takedowns in the second and third off poor throw attempts and was upset 4-3 by Air Force’s Jared Van Vleet. Undersized heavyweight Austin Harris was no match for No. 5 Brian Andrews of Wyoming in an 8-2 loss.

Both Witcraft and Harris will have to win their next match to stay alive in the tournament. Witcraft will have a tough match against top-seed Taylor LaMont of Utah Valley. LaMont dropped a 6-4 decision to No. 8 Mosha Schwartz of Northern Colorado in the quarterfinals. Harris draws No. 7 Brandon Matez of North Dakota State.

Semifinal preview

The 125, 149, 157 and 165 brackets all went to chalk on the OSU wrestlers’ side of the bracket.

If Piccininni gets past No. 4 McGwire Midkiff of North Dakota State, he’ll face the winner of Air Force’s Cody Phippen and No. 3 Alex Mackall of Iowa State. Phippen knocked off No. 2 Jacob Schwarm of Northern Iowa, 4-2, and No. 7 Christian Moody of OU, 10-3, to advance to the semis.

Lewallen will have an important match for the team race against No. 4 Jarrett Degan of ISU. The two haven’t wrestled since Lewallen re-injured his shoulder in last season’s dual that caused him to miss the rest of the 2018-19 season.

Wittlake should take care of business against No. 4 Tanner Cook of SDSU, who he beat by 14-6 major decision earlier this season.

At 157, the bracket has gone as seeded throughout. Sheets faces No. 2 Jared Franek of North Dakota State with a potential rematch against No. 1 David Carr of ISU in the finals on the line. Carr will face No. 4 Justin Thomas of OU.

Hone and Joe Smith both draw the top seeds in their brackets with Dom Demas of OU and Bryce Steiert of UNI, respectively. Both Cowboys have loss to their opponents earlier this season with Hone having two defeats to Demas.
