The Cowboys had 298 passing yards and 295 rushing yards for 593 yards of total offense.

No. 17 Oklahoma State allowed only 193 yards, and true freshman quarterback Shane Illingworth threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns en route to a 47-7 romp against Kansas on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

The Cowboys (3-0, 2-0 Big 12) offense finally came alive after some lackluster performances against Tulsa and West Virginia. Along with Illingworth’s outing, Tylan Wallace and Chuba Hubbard looked like themselves against KU (0-3, 0-2). Wallace had nine catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns, while Hubbard showed why he’s arguably the best running back in the nation with 145 yards and two scores. Even Dezmon Jackson got quite a bit of playing time with 10 carries for 91 yards.

The Cowboys were unable to punch it into the endzone on the opening drive, and settled for a chip shot 19-yard field goal from Alex Hale, who remained perfect this season by going 4 for 4. But after that, OSU never let its feet off the gas with five touchdowns for a 38-0 lead before Hale hit three more field goals.

OSU’s defense had a shutout going until late into the fourth quarter when Velton Gardner plunged in from 1 yard out against the Cowboys backups. The Cowboys held the Jayhawks’ Jalon Daniels and Miles Kendrick to 92 passing yards and had a pick from Devin Harper. KU’s Pooka Williams, one of the best Big 12 running backs, only managed 32 yards and Daniel Hishaw Jr. had a team-high 51.

There wasn’t a lot to takeaway from the win considering it was against Big 12 bottom feeder Kansas, but the Cowboys delivered like they should have for their 11th straight victory against the Jayhawks.

Up next

The Cowboys will have their lone bye week of the season before they face their first true test against Baylor (1-1, 1-1 Big 12) on Oct. 17 in Waco, Texas.

OSU coach Mike Gundy said Spencer Sanders, who suffered a right ankle sprain in the season opener, is “at least 80 percent.”

True freshman Shane Illingworth will make his second straight start for No. 17 Oklahoma State when the Cowboys visit Kansas on Saturday at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kansas.

Illingworth was 15 of 21 for 139 yards, but threw one interception in OSU’s 27-13 home win against West Virginia last week as he stepped in for Spencer Sanders, who suffered a right ankle sprain in the season opener against Tulsa on Sept. 19. The Cowboys (2-0, 1-0 Big 12) used a run-heavy attack against the Mountaineers to help ease Illingworth into his first career start.

“For a true freshman being out there, he played OK,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said of Illingworth’s performance. “There’s times that he made mistakes, but there’s times that he did make some big plays. All that’s going to take time. The guy’s young. We found a way to win and that’s what’s important right now.”

Gundy listed Sanders as the Cowboys’ starting quarterback on their two-deep depth chart for the second straight week, but opted to go with Illingworth both times to give Sanders more time to recover. Sanders is available to play, if needed, for the Cowboys when they kick off at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN.

Gundy said on OSU’s radio broadcast that Sanders is “at least 80 percent” after being 70 percent last week, but only took 40 percent of snaps in practice. Offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn and quarterbacks coach Tim Rattay made the call to start Illingworth.

The Cowboys have won 10 straight against the Jayhawks, who have allowed 85 points and are 0-2 this season. OSU has its lone bye week of the season after they play KU.

We talked to Andy Mitts of SB Nation’s Rock Chalk Talk to learn more about the Jayhawks.

No. 17 Oklahoma State is set to play their first road game this season against Kansas in Lawrence. We talked with Andy Mitts of SB Nation’s Kansas site, Rock Chalk Talk, to get some insight into Kansas.

CRFF: What is one stat OSU fans should be looking at Saturday?

Tackles for loss. Kansas trails in this stat 22-8, and it’s really showed. Multiple drives have been derailed by a single negative play, and KU hasn’t been able to string multiple TFLs together to keep their opponents from marching down the field. If KU can even up that stat, they’ll have an opportunity to keep this game close.

CRFF: Has the Les Miles pulled any sort of trickery this year? Do you see him trying anything on his old team?

It’s hard to know if any trickery we have seen is the result of Brent Dearmond or Les Miles, but regardless, there had been a disturbing lack of trickeration so far. Unless you count rotating quarterbacks in the first game.

CRFF: What are the names on KU’s roster that OSU fans need to know?

There are lots of great skill players in Pooka Williams, Velton Gardner, Andrew Parchment, Kwamie Lassiter, Stephen Robinson and more, but if Jalon Daniels doesn’t get time to get them the ball, it won’t matter much. You will likely need to look up players on defense since so many of them are new, but one name to watch is cornerback Karon Prunty. He is still extremely raw, but his ball skills show some early promise. If the defense can limit OSU, his name will be called often.

CRFF: How can KU win this game?

The Jayhawks will need to get early pressure to help disrupt the passing game, and keep OSU’s backs off the edge. KU has real problems getting to the edge in the running game, but is decent inside the tackles. The secondary will need to keep OSU from getting into a rhythm, which will be much harder if the running game is running the show.

CRFF: What’s your score prediction?

I WANT to say KU can keep this close, but it’s just too hard to see. KU can start off quickly again, but once the OSU defense adjusts to the wrinkles in the gameplan, I don’t think they can keep that momentum going. Give me OSU 38, KU 14.

BONUS: Go to for a at-home tailgate?

Any sort of fried cheese. If there isn’t something gooey and stringy and dipped in marinara, it isn’t really a tailgate.

The Cowboys seek their 11th straight win in the series against the Jayhawks.

No. 17 Oklahoma State will play its first road game of the season Saturday when they visit Kansas at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kansas.

OSU (2-0, 1-0 Big 12) kicked off Big 12 play with a throwback, run-heavy 27-13 win against West Virginia last week in Stillwater. Running backs Chuba Hubbard and LD Brown both surpassed the 100-yard mark on the ground, with true freshman quarterback Shane Illingworth making his first career start.

Brown and Hubbard will look to build off their performance against KU (0-2, 0-1), which ranks second to last in the Big 12 and 55th nationally in rushing yards allowed at 194 yards per game this season. The Cowboys have also had their fair share of success against the Jayhawks on the ground, with 200-yard games in four of their past five meetings.

Illingworth was 15 of 21 for 139 yards, but threw one interception as he stepped in for Spencer Sanders (right ankle sprain). The Cowboys listed Sanders as the starting quarterback on their two-deep depth chart for the second straight week. He was available to play against WVU, if needed, but never made it into the game because his mobility was limited. It’s unknown which QB the Cowboys will turn to or if they’ll use both.

OSU’s defense has been as advertised this season, allowing only 10 points per game. Linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga share the team lead with 17 tackles for a unit that likes to play fast and aggressive. If the defense does have a weakness it’s defending the pass from the slot, which is the area WVU found the most success moving the ball up the field.

About KU

The Jayhawks have struggled to gain positive traction in former OSU coach Les Miles’ second season at the helm. KU has dropped both of its games, 38-23 to Coastal Carolina and 47-14 at Baylor.

Running backs Velton Gardner and Pooka Williams have been rare bright spots for KU. Gardner has rushed for a team-high 151 yards and one touchdown, while Williams has 143 yards and two scores. The duo have three of the Jayhawks’ five total touchdowns.

Like OSU, KU has used three QBs this season. The Jayhawks turned to true freshman Jalon Daniels at Baylor, and he was 19 of 33 for 159 yards and sacked four times.

Hadl, Sayers statues

KU will unveil bronze statues for two College Football Hall of Famers in John Hadl and Gale Sayers at halftime. Hald was a star QB and halfback, and also shined as a defensive back and return specialist for three seasons (1959-61). Sayers, nicknamed the “Kansas Comet,” led Kansas in rushing, touchdowns and kickoff returns in all three of his seasons and had 4,020 all-purpose yards (1961-64).
