The World Cup run has now ended for the boys in the red, white and blue. Now it is expected for soccer to return to the lower sphere of American sports interest. I beg Americans to rethink their decision.

My fellow Americans, (Insert preferable president's voice and delivery) I have one plea for you as the United States make their exit from the 2014 World Cup. Stay onboard. For those that watched, we all most likely said, "I believe that we will win," and just because our boys have finally been ousted doesn't mean we have to stop believing (Cue Journey). Although this team won't play together enough to constitute a consistent following by all, there are plenty of ways to support the men that have fought with their hearts on their sleeve.

A lot of our boys have moved back to the MLS, not because it is easier competition, but to cultivate a great following within our nation. Yes there are still guys that play overseas but there are guys that you don't have to wake up early in the morning or stay up extra late to watch.

US Men's National Team Players in MLS:

Seattle Sounders: Clint Dempsey and DeAndre Yedlin - Obviously people love "Captain America" Dempsey, but we were introduced to a new name this World Cup. DeAndre Yedlin. Yedlin is one of the bright stars of American soccer and boy should we be glad that US Head Man Jurgen Klinsmann decided to go young with his roster. Yedlin was a gem when he stepped out on the pitch and he may be a new star for new fans to cling to, until the squad travels to Moscow in 2018.

Sporting Kansas City: Graham Zusi and Matt Besler - Two very pleasant surprises in this World Cup. Zusi was solid in the post-Altidore era of the 2014 World Cup. He created several great opportunities off of corners to score. Besler over time, became the most consistent defender for the US side in the tournament. These two are good examples of Klinsmann's ability to find talent and allow it to develop on the field. Sporting is also a championship side in the MLS.

Toronto FC: Michael Bradley - Boy is Michael Bradley an aggravating player to watch. Much like a Clint Chelf. Shows great promise, and ability to perform at a very high level, and then as soon as the promise is there, the bottom falls out and the questions start flowing. Bradley should now go back to fine form after this rough spell, but what does it matter if it's just on club level. At any rate, Oklahoma State fans may enjoy watching this player since they can relate to him pretty well.

US Men's National Team Players Overseas:

Bayern Munich: Julian Green - Get in on this kid while we're early. He's 19 and he already has as many goals as Cristiano Ronaldo. That is more in jest to Ronaldo, but I digress. Green is still one of the bright young stars in US soccer, and another one of the US-German military base players that is benefitting from growing up in Europe. Green is also on one of the world's great club teams in Bayern Munich, so not only will you get the opportunity to watch this great young player, but also be able to watch a championship side.

Everton: Tim Howard - This man won some fans today. His valiant effort and legendary one at that will be remembered for a long time by US soccer fans. Howard has been around for a while, having the second most appearances of any USMNT players. Howard has played with some of the top players in the world in his time as a professional. He may be on the downslope of his career but his Everton side is a competitive side, but isn't necessarily a trophy competitor. Last season Belgium's superstar Romelu Lukaku, yes the same one that wreaked havoc today, was one of Howard's teammates while on loan from Chelsea.

Sunderland: Jozy Altidore - It was unfortunate that the US star went down in game one and never was able to see any action after that. That all being said, Altidore is still a great player to watch. Altidore hasn't had a great career as a club player, but hopefully there will be a breakthrough with him in the coming seasons so that he can climb up the ladder in the EPL. The US needs a player to be at the highest level of club play and right now, it will either be Altidore or Julian Green. Jozy is great player, now he's the face with Dempsey getting older.

Just a little match with nothing on the line except making it through to the knockout round of the World Cup.

I'M A BIG FAN OF TIES...

Pretty simple really.

A draw and everybody is happy.

Lose, and I think the US is out.

Don't let the drama in Ghana's camp fool you (two players kicked off the team), they will be playing for their lives today. Given Portugal's position, and I've said this before, should Ghana jump out with an early goal the Portuguese could easily close up shop and Ghana could put 2-3 goals on the board.

If the US loses and Ghana wins, the first tie-breaker is goal differential. The US is +2 over Ghana, so this will be a tie at the least (US lose by 1, Ghana wins by 1). Either of those numbers flip to 2 and the US is gone.

The second tie-breaker is total goals scored. The US has 4, Ghana 3. Getting nervous yet?

We love the third tie-breaker, which is head to head. The US beat Ghana.

I'm all for a game of hacky sack breaking out in the midfield today.

If that's not going to happen, and both coaches have said as much, then the back line and Howard, along with Bradley, will need to have one of their best performances ever to handle probably the most lethal attacking group in the tournament.

I'm hoping that this is all square after about 70 minutes, then winks and nods are passed around and we all can get a happy night's sleep.

WE LOVE DRAWS WITH GERMANY!!!

With the US Men's National Team testing the boundaries of our emotions, many of us are likely praying for the same thing...

...collusion...

I don't know about you, but I don't know how much more I can take. To heck with the players, they are trained for this.

After the 2nd US goal against Portugal, I had to take Advil because my head was splitting.

After the dream destroying dagger of a cross by Ronaldo snatched victory and advancement from the US, I struggled to go to sleep. Woke up at 5am the next morning and couldn't go back to sleep thinking about that mess.

I wonder if John Brooks dreamed about that?

And now we wait....

...for Germany.

Who the hell knows how this will play out. Klinsmann has already said there would be no agreement to play for a tie.

That's significant because a draw would put both Germany and the US through.

Of course he's going to say that publicly. Who would want to admit to that kind of collusion?

I would fully expect that, once the match reached about the 70 minute mark, if it was still square, that players and coaches alike would wink and nod at each other and we would go along our merry way. There has been more than one example in past world cup play of such "things."

So then, just to drive the nail home, Klinsmann comes out with claims that Germany received preferential treatment in scheduling for group play.

Wonderful.

The US were so psyched to get a crack at, then beat, Ghana, their nemesis of the last two World Cups. Well wouldn't you know, thanks to those two defensive whiffs against Portugal, Ghana again has the opportunity to eliminate the US.

You see, thanks to goal differential (the difference between goals scored and goals allowed for a team), Germany has nothing to worry about. Win, lose, or draw, the Germans have a 99.7% chance of advancing. Can't see them losing to the US 2-0 and Ghana beating Portugal 3-0. Even still, if that happened Germany would still advance on total goals.

Despite that, because of a terrible draw vs Ghana, the Germans need to win or draw to win the group, which is still a very desirable prize.

The US, on the other hand, is actually in a very vulnerable position. While some statistical services say the Americans have a 76% chance of advancing, I think that is being extremely generous given the situation.

The US could easily lose to Germany 1-0 or 2-1. Ghana is in a far more motivated position than Portugal, as goal differential is their 800 lb gorilla in the room thanks to their opening match meltdown against Germany. Should Ghana jump on top early, I could see the Portuguese folding up the tents. Ghana, knowing that an American loss and goal differential are their only hope, will keep bringing the attack. Wouldn't be shocked at all to see Ghana ring up 2-3 goals, no problem. The current goal differential between the US and Ghana is 2. Any combination of US loss and Ghana win that adds up to 3 or more goals sends the Americans home.

So let's say that Ghana ties the US on goal differential. The next tie-breaker is total goals scored. Ghana trails the US 4-3. That's just as dangerous, if not more dangerous, than goal differential. I could definitely see the US registering 0 or 1 goal, and Ghana putting 2 or 3 on the board. Americans go home again.

If by some miracle the US gets past those 2 tie-breakers they are home free, as the next step is head to head, and the US beat Ghana.

I'm telling you right now, this is a 50/50 crap shoot at best for Klinsmann and Company. It would be an absolute shame for the US to not advance, as the knockout round bracket sets up well. If the Americans finish runner up in their group, they would probably get Belgium, which I think is a good draw for the US and a chance to get to the semi-finals.

I would be calling my fellow countrymen right now, talk about old times, make all chummy chummy, then practice kick ball in the midfield for 90 minutes.

But of course this World Cup is the stuff of chaos. Who would've thought that England, Spain, and probably Portugal would all be gone. Italy is on the edge. Brazil barely got through. Germany lathered up Portugal, then had to rally to scratch out a draw against Ghana.

So why should we expect anything but chaos and another emotional roller coaster on Thursday.

A large bottle of Advil will be close by my side.

GO USMNT!!!

Portugal is minus several starters.

For the US, a win and they're in. A draw leaves them in a very strong position.

A loss could mean three and out.

The young guys will need to step up. John Brooks was the hero in match one. Maybe Wondo tilts the table in match 2?

What we thought might be a straightforward short trip for the US Men's National Soccer team has suddenly turned into a roller coaster ride of emotions with a chance to advance hanging in the balance, and a defeated nemesis could still send them home.

We all collectively groaned when the groups were announced for the initial stage of World Cup play.

The US group was immediately nicknamed "The Group of Death."

Germany...
Portugal...

...and World Cup US killer Ghana.

Then Klinsmann decided that US soccer legend and World Cup hero, Landon Donovan, was not worthy of a spot on the 2014 US Men's National team about to compete in Brazil.

The boys from America played some "friendly's" to warm up for the World Cup. Despite winning all 3 matches, the back line would have been challenged to stop an attack from my son's 2nd grade soccer team.

We were pretty much resigned to a "three and out" for 2014's World Cup.

Then the schedule came out and a little hope was revived. The US would get Ghana first. The team that had knocked the US out of the last two World Cups would be no gimmie, but this was a winnable match. As everyone knows, starting with a win and 3 points plus some all important goal differential is huge. Takes away a little pressure for the second match and virtually guarantees that, worst case scenario, you will be playing for a chance to advance to the knockout round in match #3. Now match #3 would be against Germany, but Jerry Clower would have said they still had a "fightin chance."

Then the unthinkable happened.

Portugal came completely unraveled as Germany dismantled them 4-0. When John Brooks 86th minute header lifted the US to a gut-wrenching win over Ghana, the tables completely turned for the Americans' chances of advancing to the knockout round.

Unfortunately, however, even after the win the pressure is still squarely on the US because of the schedule which so kindly set them up in the first place.

All Klinsmann has to do is coax a draw out of his squad vs Portugal, a team now without two of its starting back line (red card & injury) and looking very vulnerable. The US too is without a star as Josy Altidore went down with a hamstring injury that will keep him out of at least the next match, and starting defender Matt Besler might also be a scratch due to the same issue. Regardless, a draw gets the US to 4 points and maintains the goal differential of 5 between the Americans (+1) and the Portuguese (-4). Why is that important?

Because the US next plays Germany to close out group play. That's not likely to be a win. Portugal gets Ghana, who will be done after losing to Germany and likely not very motivated. That looks like a win.

That would make it 4 points apiece for the US and Portugal with the first tiebreaker being goal differential. The US would need to lose and Portugal would need to win by a combined goal differential of 6 for the US to get booted (ex: Ger 3, US 0 and Port 3, Ghana 0). Crazier things have happened, but the odds would definitely favor the US. Ghana could be ripe for something like that, but Germany, who will easily advance, should have little motivation to thrash the US unless they want to stick it to Klinsmann. Who knows, but short of a clear win a draw would still put the US in a very strong position. I won't even go into the scenarios if the goal differential ended up a tie.

A loss would likely spell doom.

If Portugal wins they would be tied with the US. With the Portuguese facing a much easier opponent (Ghana) than the US faces (Germany) in the 3rd and final group match, the advantage would clearly go to Portugal.

The US will need to play much better and actually maintain possession for more than a couple of passes if they hope to have a puncher's chance Sunday evening.

We thought beating Ghana would exorcise the demons. Turns out the team that knocked the Americans out of the last two World Cups could still play a hand in eliminating the US.

An entire nation will be watching Sunday, June 22 at 6pm Eastern.

BEAT PORTUGAL!!!

Complete schedule, standings, results, and highlights of the 2014 World Cup, updated daily.

The World Cup begins with group play which was determined by a seeded draw. In group play teams play in a round robin format where they receive three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. Any ties in a group are determined by each teams goal differential. Basically every single goal is important. The top 2 teams from each group advance to the knock out stages. Tie-breakers go like this...

It didn't take long for the drama to start. Yesterday the Netherlands absolutely dismantled Spain in a 5-1 upset. Spain is the defending World Cup Champion, and is considered the best team in the world, but now their tournament hopes are on the brink. A four goal differential in one game is huge. Chances are a tie would send them home. They must win out, and hope the Dutch do the same.

The United States has their work cut out to make it out of group G, otherwise known as the group of death. Germany is the second ranked team on the planet and the favorite to claim the top spot. Portugal only has one of the best players in the world in Cristiano Ronaldo, and an extremely talented roster in general. Ghana is the final team in the group, and is the bane of team USA's existence in the World Cup. The African country has sent the U.S. home the previous two.
