Oklahoma State notched back-to-back victories for the first time since last season's Big 12 Tournament after defeating Tennessee-Martin, 1-0, Sunday at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
"We feel good obviously," said OSU coach Colin Carmichael after Sunday's game. "Our goal coming in was to get two wins (on the weekend) and given the events of the first few weeks, that's really all that counts at this point. We know we can play better, but we're just really happy to come out of the weekend with two wins."
After a lackluster first half, both teams went into the locker room scoreless, but the Cowgirls would finally strike early in the second half. In her first start back from injury, Madison Mercado scored what would be the game-winning goal in the 66th minute. Friday night's hero, Allie Stephenson, delivered the pass to Mercado, who scored the easy goal, and lifted her team to 2-6 on the season.
Mercado was the offensive standout, but goalkeeper Rosa Medina may have stolen the show. Medina recorded her first shutout of the season while blanking UT-Martin (4-3-0), who posted seven shots. Oklahoma State doubled its foes shots with 14 attempts, including nine in the first half. UT-Martin goalkeeper Mariah Klenke also displayed her talents, tallying eight saves, however, the effort wasn't enough for a victory.
The Cowgirls will begin Stillwater Holiday Inn & Suites OSU Invitational play Friday against Memphis at 7 p.m. from Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
