Wyatt Sheets upsets No. 14 Josh Humphreys in No. 2 Oklahoma State’s 27-6 win over No. 22 Lehigh

The Cowboys go 1-2 in ranked vs. ranked matches.

The No. 2-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team won eight bouts, including three by major decision, to ride away with a 27-6 win over No. 22 Lehigh on Sunday afternoon at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater.

With the dual victory, the Cowboys remain undefeated at 12-0 this season.

Nick Piccininni, ranked No. 4 at 125 pounds, improved to 24-0 this season with a 16-5 major decision over Luke Resnick. No. 15 Kaid Brock (141) and No. 10 Dakota Geer (197) also picked up major decision victories.

Match of the dual: OSU’s Wyatt Sheets upsets Lehigh’s No. 14 Josh Humphreys

Sheets’ flexibility was on full display from the start of his 7-5 sudden victory decision over Humphreys.

The Cowboy avoided a first-period takedown attempt by doing a full extension splits that would make Simon Biles proud. Sheets then escaped to start the second period then scored a takedown before Humphreys’ reversal stood after a review.

Sheets was able to score a reversal of his own by wiggling out the back while Humphreys was on top for a 5-2 lead after the first.

Humphreys scored a takedown in the final seconds to send the bout 5-5 to sudden victory. Sheets needed less than 30 seconds to grab the win after a wild scramble.

Cowboys go 1-2 in ranked vs. ranked matches

No. 5 Joe Smith (174) and No. 10 Jacobe Smith (184) both dropped their bouts against ranked opponents, while No. 2 heavyweight Derek White scored a 3-2 win over No. 6 Jordan Wood.

Joe Smith was hit with a hands-to-the-face call moments into his match against No. 6 Jordan Kutler. The Cowboy escaped in the second, but Kutler answered in the third period and held off multiple re-attack attempts for a 3-1 decision after a caution violation. Joe Smith went 0-2 during the weekend as he also dropped a 5-4 decision to No. 8 Taylor Lujan of Northern Iowa on Friday.

After a 8-4 upset win over No. 6 Drew Foster of UNI, Jacobe Smith couldn’t make it back-to-back wins against top-10 foes. No. 8 Ryan Preisch scored three takedowns, including two in the third period, for a 8-3 decision over Jacobe Smith.

Nearing return

All-Americans Chandler Rogers (165) and Preston Weigel (197) weighed in, but did not wrestle. It’s the second straight weekend Rogers, who is ranked at No. 10, has hit the scale since his hamstring injury at the Southern Scuffle in early January.
