Oklahoma State’s Dakota Geer, Joe Smith qualify for NCAA tournament

Geer takes third at 184 pounds, while Smith grabs fifth at 165.

Oklahoma State’s Dakota Geer, top, controls Utah Valley’s Will Stumner during their 184-pound third-place match at the Big 12 Championship on Sunday, March 10, 2019, at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Oklahoma State’s Dakota Geer and Joe Smith both earned automatic bids to the NCAA tournament Sunday at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Geer posted two major decisions in the consolation round to take third place at 184 pounds. He defeated Jackson Hemauer of Fresno State, 11-3, before beating Will Stumner of Utah Valley for the second time in as many days with a 16-3 win for third.

Smith dropped a 4-2 decision to Branson Ashworth of Wyoming in the consolation semifinals to force a must-win situation for Smith to qualify for NCAAs at 165 pounds. Smith scored four takedowns en route to a 10-2 major decision over Logan Schumacher of Iowa State to take fifth place.

Wyatt Sheets, however, will have to wait to find out if he will receive an at-large bid to NCAAs as the Big 12 only receive an automatic bid for its tournament champion. Sheets escaped with 2 seconds left in his match against Jacob Wright of Fresno State for a 3-2 win, but fell 7-4 to Alex Mossing of Air Force in the third-place bout.

Sheets — who won by 15-0 technical fall against Mossing in the dual earlier this season — couldn’t secure positioning on a throw for a takedown on the boundary line and Mossing capitalized with one his own with 38 seconds left for the win.

OSU now has nine wrestlers qualified for NCAAs, which is March 21-23 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. Seven of those nine will wrestle in the Big 12 championship finals that start at 7 p.m. Sunday. The finals will air on Fox Sports Regional Networks.
