Football Recruiting: Brenen Thompson, Garret Rangle announce official visits to Oklahoma State

Is Oklahoma State gearing up for a big recruiting event?

For the first time in more than a year, Oklahoma State will be officially playing host to a number of prominent college football recruits and commits on campus in Stillwater.

Two class of 2022 prospects — OSU quarterback commit Garret Rangel and four-star wide receiver target Brenen Thompson — have announced on Twitter that they are planning official visits to Oklahoma State on June 9-11.

This lines up with the latest news and rumors regarding the in-person recruiting ban that has been in place since March of 2020 when the NCAA instituted a dead period to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Back in February of this year, the NCAA voted to extend the recruiting dead period to May 31st, negating the possibility of schools hosting recruits for spring games.

But, it looks like things are about to finally get back to normal. The NCAA is set to meet again in April for another vote, and this time, it seems the ban is finally going to be lifted.

The NCAA announced Thursday that member schools “generally support” lifting the extended dead period and bringing back in-person recruiting by June 1.

With the ban now expected to finally be lifted, you can expect a wave of recruiting events on college campuses across the country.

While Rangel and Thompson are just the first to announce their official visits to Oklahoma State that Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday in June, there’s a good chance there will be more. It would make sense to pick a three day stretch and get as many of the Cowboys top targets for 2022 and 2023 on campus. Not to mention, give some of the 2022 commits their first opportunity to visit the campus alongside each other.

Getting Rangel on campus is great. Getting Thompson is even better. An Under Armour All American and a top-100 recruit making his first official visit to Stillwater will give Cowboy coaches the first chance to make a strong impression.

It will be interesting to see who else plans an official or unofficial visit to Stillwater on this same three-day stretch as the dates grow nearer.

Update:

The list of players that have announced they are making official visits to Stillwater June 9-11 continues to grow, while others are announcing official visits for other days. We will keep the list updated here.
